Sumrall introduced at Tulane

I kept seeing his name mentioned so I decided to start watching his press conferences

The link provided is his introduction speech at Tulane. I must say, this guy is impressive. -fast forard to 19:30

High Character guy
Strong family guy (I think this is 100% undervalued today)
Extremely personable
Direct- yet very geniune
Players coach
No BS type coach
Went back and hugged his players at Troy, went out of his way to thank them for taking a chance on him as a new Head coach.... that should mean something...

Some descibe him as a "Dawg" of a coach... former LB player at KY, had stops at Ole Miss, KY, Troy, and Tulane

I believe he deserves an interview.

We need a young guy who brings passion

He is everything Kelly was not..on a personal level

From the south..

bottom line the SEC is a meat grinder- winning at this level is difficult- no matter who you bring in, the meat grinder eats the weak.

The new coach has to be a dude with character, energy, and well liked...

Having a wife who supports his career a stable family life is huge...

he is 43 if people are wondering, been in coaching since 2005

He’s young and hungry. He’s already recruiting LA and knows the state. He is and up and comer so will have an affordable contract. He stepped into a majorly in flux Tulane and steadied the ship fast.

It’s exactly what we should want.

365 Sports is saying that he would be a perfect fit at LSU. Played for Kentucky and spent time coaching there and at Ole Miss. Young, aggressive guy that works his arse off.

I'm sorry man, if he wasn't already in Louisiana 99% of us wouldn't know who he is.

He's a good coach but even Tulane people say he isn't ready

He’s good, but probably not ready for a top 5 job like LSU

He went 9-5 last season with a stacked team and one of the best QBs in college football. Got pounded in the AAC title game by Army

This year he’s 6-1 with the best win being Duke

I don’t think LSU fired BK to take a risk on a small school coach IMO

No it isn’t.

LSU isn’t a promotion you give some guy who’s 15-6 at Tulane.

Let him take another P5 gig without the expectations to experiment his skills.

Kiffin, Sumrall, Drinkwitz and Lea.

We {I'm an LSU Alum, so I can say WE) CAN get Kiffin for the BIG $$$. (Another big contract and buyout though).

He had to replace like 60 players after Fritz left.... I wouldn't say it was stacked.

Per Google.

quote:

Upon arriving at Tulane, head coach Jon Sumrall faced a massive roster overhaul, having to replace nearly 60 players who had either entered the transfer portal or graduated after the 2024 season. This roster turnover was largely due to the departure of his predecessor, Willie Fritz, for Houston.

Prominent players Sumrall had to replace include:

Quarterback: The most high-profile departure was quarterback Darian Mensah, a four-star prospect who transferred to Duke and was reportedly offered a $4 million-per-year NIL deal. Mensah's exit left a significant hole at the position.

Running Back: Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Makhi Hughes left for Oregon.

Receivers: The top four receivers from the previous season all departed.

Other key positions: Sumrall also had to replace the starting tight end (Alex Bauman, who went to Miami), the punter (Will Karoll), and other key players.

In response to the exodus, Sumrall immediately turned to the transfer portal to rebuild his roster, bringing in 60 new players and only having five returning starters for the 2025 season. Among the new additions was quarterback Jake Retzlaff from BYU.

Then his QB up and left this year and he had to find someone on the fly and adapt.

He should garner an interview i would think. Im not saying he's the greatest. But I think he's a good coach.

Because maybe they don’t want to lose their coach?

He may end up being a great P4 coach, but this is delusional and the same kind of thinking Florida had about Napier.

Also, he didn’t steady a ship. Tulane is 6-1 and you have no idea how they finish. They were 9-5 last year. And just before Sumrall took Fritz’s place they were coming off of 2 incredible seasons where they went 23-5.

We just hired a guy that went to a national championship and two playoffs at Notre Dame.

Worked great. Yall have to get out of this mindset that the only good candidates are like the 5 that aren’t realistic.

As a Tulane fan I have no issue with ‘bigger’ programs coming to poach our coaches. That means we are successful. However I don’t think he is ready.

I said in another thread about him that he would benefit by staying a year or 2 more at Tulane, getting a new OC then hire someone like a Jerry Kill to kinda help him grow as a coach. He has only been a head coach for 3.5 years.
