The Gipper was a free trader, no matter what the current President says.

The MAGA crowd likes to dismiss Ronald Reagan as irrelevant today, but apparently he still matters to President Trump. How else to explain Mr. Trump’s tantrum against Canada after the province of Ontario invoked the Gipper on trade in a television ad?
The Ontario government had the temerity to buy ad time to run clips of Reagan’s 1987 remarks warning about the dangers of protectionism. Mr. Trump pitched a social-media fit in response late Thursday, claiming Ontario “fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.”
quote:
Ontario then said it would pull the ad, but when it still ran during sporting events on the weekend, Mr. Trump escalated with an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods on top of the taxes he has already imposed.
quote:
Mr. Trump is wrong about the Reagan speech, and he was wrong when he said on social media that “Ronald Reagan LOVED tariffs for purposes of National Security and the Economy.” The Gipper was a free trader. In the 1987 speech, Reagan was trying to explain why he was making an exception to his free-trade policies on semiconductor imports from Japan.
quote:
Mr. Trump wants tariffs as a policy rule, not the exception. Reagan knew that tariffs are taxes, while Mr. Trump pretends they are paid by foreigners. Reagan knew protectionist barriers over time breed complacency and lack of innovation. Mr. Trump thinks he’s making American manufacturing great again, when he is really hurting U.S. manufacturers by burdening them with higher costs. See American companies that use aluminum or steel.

For all the good Trump has done in lots of areas, he still cannot stop being a toddler in so many other aspects.

The Gipper also gave amnesty to 3 million in California. How'd that work out?

Look up Reagan and Harley Davidson while your at it.

Quit reading right here. Notice who was begging for attention after said "tantrum"? It wasn't Trump.

It was 40 years ago. Economies have changed. Politics have changed. Countries (Canada) have changed. FFS.

Whats funny is I saw a Tik Tok of a farmer talking about his corn and getting ready to sell that years crop.
He said there was a story done by Leftist media about a farmer struggling due to tariffs. He said everything the farmer stated was FALSE, and could have been verifed as such, yet they ran it anyway.

The ad the Canada ran took Reagan out of context (shocking, I know).
Reagan said that he prefers free trade but when another country places barriers, they need to be met with consequences.
This speech was in reference to Japan whom Reagan placed tariffs on.

Free trade works well if it is traded truly free. But if other countries charge or deny entry for our goods but expect us not to charge or deny goods that’s not exactly free trade is it? If other countries subsidized goods to a company to allow exploitation of trade that’s not so free. If countries do all of above and use what amounts to slave labor then that’s not so good either.

Reagan also fricked up the border and gave away CA forever.

You mean like, he thought one-sided tariffs aren't free trade? Sounds a lot like what Trump is saying.

Do you know who agrees with Trumps economics? Bernie.
Yes, Bernie Sanders supports tariffs and buying stock in private companies with public money, just like your Orange goofball.

The Gipper is who created the modern day HUD Section 8 rental assistance program quagmire and is the person responsible for closing down the mental institutions. Not every decision he made was some good for American society.
