Every coaching hire will be risky and very few of them work out, but he seems to be young motivated and built with the right mindset that you would want from a coach.

Just don’t end up with a huge buy out type contract and give him a shot.

I like him. Don’t think this is a Napier scenario and I like Napier. Napier was a good recruiter and culture guy, but has always been a horrendous in game coach. He could get away with it at UL but not at Florida. Sumrall doesn’t seem to be like this.

This is the right answer.

Back when we were looking for Ogre's replacement, any time Sunbelt Billy was brought up the pumpers would hype his team's "record" while more realistic folks looked at his playcalling and said, "nah, pass". He got away with it at Lafayette Junior College against lesser opponents, but got eaten up by the bit dogs in the SEC.

I'm not opposed to hiring a hotshot up-and-comer as HC if his body of work shows an actual aptitude for the job. Napier would have failed that test (and, in hindsight, so would Kelly).

Forget big names as the primary criteria. Do the hard work and research to find someone that actually shows a grasp of the modern game, an ability to manage a modern roster both in game-planning and play-calling. Someone that can get a recruit to be jazzed to come to LSU for something besides the big bag waiting on the doorstep.

That might - or might not - be a Kiffen type person.

Just my opinion, folks.

Tbf, Napier recruited at a much higher level at UL than his peers and made that team much more talented. The talent masked his coaching blunders. You can’t out recruit like that at Florida relative to other SEC opponents, so you have to actually coach. Brian Kelly has shown this, this season

Sumrall should be your guy, but doubt he can get past your boosters’ hubris.

I like him much better than Napier

Billy always came off as a used car salesman that was trying to convince everyone he was ready for the job. The day ULL was playing in the conference championship, he was on the air here selling himself and his “process”

Sumrall seems like a football guy

LSU football hasn’t been relevant in more than 5 years. How is it a “top 5” job? I mean, it’s a good job at a power school, but hardly top 5.

Our relevancy the last 5 years is irrelevant. LSU is widely considered an elite P5 job. 3 coaches prior to Kelly won titles. We have an unbelievable recruiting base, great fan support, NIL funds, and an NFLesque front office now.

There's a reason Brian Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU.

He will, whether it's LSU, Florida, Penn State or Auburn. The more i'm learning about Sumrall, i like.

23-4 @ Troy, back to back Sun Belt Championships
15-6 so far at Tulane, currently 6-1, easily could be 11-1 at end of season with their remaining schedule. Only loss was to Ole Miss, which was a bit of a beating. Make sure he has a good OC.

ETA: Also, doing so with only 5 returning starters at Tulane, 1 of whom is injured.

So, "if" we get Sumrall, i got to think he's going to bring some coaches with him, especially defensive coaches, since he's a defensive guy.

Greg Gasparato

quote:

Gasparato is entering his first year at Tulane as the defensive coordinator/safeties coach.

He arrives at Tulane after serving as the interim head coach at Troy University for their 76 Birmingham Bowl contest after working as the program’s defensive coordinator for the 2023 season.

Troy set the program and Sun Belt single-season record with 47 sacks, and the Trojans ranked in the top 15 nationally in sacks (3rd), scoring defense (10th), rushing defense (12th) and total defense (14th).

Gasparato and the Trojans entered the 76 Birmingham Bowl having won 10 consecutive games including a 48-23 victory over Appalachian State in the 2023 Sun Belt Championship Game.

Troy held eight of its 14 opponents to fewer than 300 yards of total offense on the season, while Javon Solomon and Richard Jibunor became just the second Troy duo to record nine or more sacks in the same season; Solomon ranked third in the country and led the Sun Belt with a Troy single-season record 16 sacks. He was drafted in the fifth round by the Buffalo Bills during 2024 NFL Draft.

In his season in charge of the Troy defense, Gasparato saw nine of his players earn All-Sun Belt yearly honors in defensive lineman Solomon (First Team), defensive lineman Jibunor (First Team), defensive back Reddy Stewart (First Team), defensive lineman TJ Jackson (Second Team), defensive back Dell Pettus (Second Team), defensive back Irshaad Davis (Third Team), defensive back O’Shai Fletcher (Honorable Mention), defensive lineman Budda Jones (Honorable Mention) and defensive back Caleb Ransaw (Honorable Mention)

The Trojans handed Army its first shutout at home in 20 years and first overall shutout in nine seasons, and Troy defeated in-state rival South Alabama for a sixth straight season.

Don't know if he'd replace baker but he'd be an excellent coach to have on staff.

Napier was the HC at Louisiana-Lafayette, not LOUISVILLE.

I really don’t think Sumrall is comparable to Billy.
