Has given up an average of 34.6 ppg( 24 to ole miss, 31 to Vanderbilt , 49 to A&M) and an average of 435 total yards of offense. I think he’s overrated as hell as a DC.

His defenses are great at stoping average offenses with a statue at qb but gets utterly exposed by competent offenses with mobile qb’s. Smart OC’s coach circles around him and take advantage of how reckless he is with his blitzes. I respect baker but I’m not sure he’s a national champion caliber DC

He’s overrated. We’ll see if Lane wants to retain him or not

He has an achillies heel in dual threat QBs for the most part. He did well against Sellers.

But in general, dual threat QBs are hard to defend. It also doesn't help when your offense goes 3 and out time and time again.

He’s slightly above average.

This.

He's a good DC. He does need to figure out the fast QB thing, but he's a solid DC that has no support from the offense (or ST in the last game). I also think Weeks being out has been really bad for the defense, he must be the guy getting everyone in position.

Injuries hasn’t helped but I said the same thing at Vandy. Some guy was saying he should be our next coach but when I pointed this out he just didn’t believe me. Our defense isn’t very good.

It is a distributing trend the receipts against mobile QBs and the lack of putting a spy on them most of the game.

I guess the question is ultimately how was he so successful at Mizzou with a ton of less talent than here? It's not like week in and week out he got tore apart by mobile QBs there. I know Jayden did a number on him in 2023, but he did that on everyone.

Not saying I wouldnt be ok moving on from Baker but I also see the guy having success probably wherever he goes. He obviously made some really good improvements to the defense this year compared to last but potentially the entire souring of the program around him caused things to look much worse in recent weeks than it would have under a more stable regime as well.

The A&M game was absurdly ugly, a team that could barely score on Auburn a few weeks earlier. The Vandy game was also a bit ugly, but 31 is not the end of the world there considering the scores Vandy had been putting up most of the season. 24 is actually really good against Ole Miss even if Chambliss had his way with us most of that game. Hard to fault him much for that game. I dont think anyone would care that much about the OM game had we won 26-24 or something.

It also doesn’t help when your defense can’t get off the field on 3rd downs.

It's even harder when your offense leaves your defense on the field for most of the game.

Losing your clear cut leader on defense is tough to overcome that’s fair but you also brought in a loaded lb class that includes a guy like Charles Ross that runs a 10.3 100 meter. No qb in the country is beating Ross sideline to sideline including Reed so when your struggling mightily to stop the running qb why not give one of your ultra talented freshman LB’s a chance at the qb spy role ? His lack of trying new things and continuing to trout out lb’s that don’t have the speed to stop mobile QBs like keys and west weeks is stubbornness

Even at Mizzou he struggled mightily to scheme agaisnt mobile QB’s. Mizzou fans would tell you that. He simply is too reckless and doesn’t commit to spying them

Agree on the dual threat part but the Sellars deal is explainable. First, Sellars KILLED LSU in the first half last year. He was injured before halftime and didn't play the second half. So Baker actually did lousy against Sellars last year. This year, Sellars was injured in the game vs Kentucky and didn't play in the 2nd half. He clearly was still recovering vs LSU. By the Alabama game, he looked great again but LSU caught him at the right time.

This has been a problem since last year. Buck stops with the coach. He's getting paid a lot of money to get this figured out and he had all offseason with premier players from the portal to implement a new scheme

I understand the offense hasn't helped at all, but my god man, they've had numerous times to help themselves and get off the field, and they give up a big chunk play or allow the QB to scramble for big yardage.

Since Marcel Reed entered last year's game, they've allowed 10 TDs, 1 FG and only gotten 4 stops vs A&M (2 INTs and 2 punts).

The key factor here is Whit Weeks. Losing him exposed just how slow the LB core is outside of Perkins (who seems to just be slow upstairs).

he made a kelly mistake. kelly wouldn't take Nuss out; BAker won't take perkins out. it's like we've got 10 men on the field on defense.

if you're that stupid I don't want you as my DC

What’s frustrating is we have plenty of fast LB’s in the room. Singleton is a burner, freshmen pups like Zach weeks, Charles Ross and Jaiden braiker can absolutely fly. Baker keeps putting the slowest lb’s we have on the field together in keys and west weeks. I dont think either are bad players but those are not the guys you play against ultra mobile Qb’s especially together.

I have never ever understood the excuse that "oh, the offense is so bad the defense has to play the entire game". Uuuuhhh nnnnooo, actually they don't. There is no NCAA rule that if your offense is not effective the defense has to play a lot. Make the opponent punt just like LSU had to punt. And to expand your 3rd down statement, it wasn't just 3rd down, it was 3rd and 14, 3rd and 9, etc. Baker was fine on 1st and 2nd downs but his 3rd down defenses are crap!

That’s where I’m at with baker. Elite dc’s make a change when it’s clear a player is a liability. His refusal to hold Perkins accountable and continuing to trout him out there when he’s missing assignments, over running players , tackling horrendous and taking awful angles is damning. Kirk herbstreit straight up blasted how awful of a spy Perkins was on national tv everyone but baker can see it
