CAD's latest pet peeve: obviously empty coffee containers

I've been noticing this more and more and now I can't unsee it.
Someone walks up with a to-go carton holding coffees on the street or they're holding 2 and hand ones to the other person who immediately takes a drink and it's so obvious it's empty. I'm watching a show right now where the guy takes a drink and turns it nearly 90 degrees to take the first sip.
I don't know why but this bugs me as much as the 555 area code all movies use. Just takes me right out of the experience.

My top pet peeves are:
Broke people with menial jobs living in HUGE apartments and homes.
100s of lit candles. Nobody has the time or MONEY for that.
The family breakfast. Everyone sits down to a huge meal and when the conversation ends everyone gets up to leave and at best one kid grabs a piece of bacon on the way out.

I line how Naked Gun made fun of this. Every scene they were handed coffee.

My wife and I complain about this all the time.

Life was better when men always drank whiskey from a bottle in movies. The studio just poured tea into the bottle and they could drink as much as a man could drink. And we liked it.

This has bothered me for decades.

I get that you might shoot a scene over and over but at least fill it with water or something to give it some heft so it's not so obvious it's an empty prop.

Medical examiners eating during an autopsy. Always.

This isn't as much of a thing ... I absolutely refuse to do it in a film as it screams Hallmark MOW.
We now usually buy phone numbers and use them for that bit of reality.
As far as coffee .... I will keep an eye on this on the next one. Good props teams would never allow this.

This has driven me crazy for 20 years. It's a very close second behind the bottle of champagne exploding to signal arousal.
ETA: It's not just coffee either. It's not as bad as it used to be but any time someone takes a drink in a movie or tv show, even if water, there is a 60% chance it's empty.

2 movies in the last day did this:
- 28 weeks later (come on, you have zombie heads exploding in 3D but you cant put a little liquid in the coffee cup you're handing to Hawkeye?
- 10 steps to love

I always notice that as well. I always notice discrepancies in movies from scene to scene. Like the hair or the clothing are different.

I'll be there in10 minutes. Leaves mid-day, next scene pulling up and its pitch-black outside.
Almost all scenes with a gun. I get the slide the rack back or pump the shotgun for effect. But when they know they are going in and likely to get shot at they wait until after they are shot at to check ammo. Or the shotgun that holds 20 rounds or never needs to be reloaded. Using cover when being fired at to only stand completely up or out from behind cover to return fire.

The worst is the use of standard vitals for everyone on a monitor.
“They aren’t going to make it. They are too sick!”
**Person has a heart rate of 75, BP 120/80, O2 sats of 100%.

Seems like so many hospital scenes have a PA announcement "Dr. Davis telephone please, Dr. Davis telephone please..."

Non stop knife and fork scraping on plates.
People in major movies still using flip phones - it’s 2025. Everyone has a phone with an actual screen.
Almost no one says “bye” or otherwise ends their conversation when talking on the phone. The conversation ends and they just hang up.
People enter buildings and then don’t shut the door. Sometimes the door is still opened 10 minutes later when they leave, sometimes it’s magically closed
Kids or blue collar type of people driving a late 70s pristine Bronco (or something similar). Those can be $75k-$150k for some off the ones they are driving. Bonus is that some of these people are driving that while being portrayed as “poor” or having money issues. I’m. Just sell your $75,000 vehicle and you can pay for your college or whatever your problem is.

When someone is in a run and gun shootout with a pistol and fail to pick up the first available rifle instead as they’re whacking the bad guys.
You would practically 100% of the time prefer a rifle over a pistol.

There’s a website that tracks empty drink containers in shows and movies I think.
You’re right. It is noticeable. Hilarious what kind of mundane physics we are used to.
