The new model going forward in college football

will be paying a HC and staff under $400,000 per year with substantial bonuses for different levels of success.
That is because all of the excess $ have to go to the players, just like the NFL, because you have to have the players much more than whatever HC's bring to the table.
LSU might as well be the one to start that model in motion.
LSU is going to have to spend an enormous amount of money the next two years on players to keep and lure top talent to LSU.
IF LSU gives mega contract to a coach or coaches again......not learning from their mistake, then it will be a crap shoot to what success has in the near future.
Coaches have to have the players and North Carolina is proving have in spades every single game.
It is time LSU became a leader rather than a follower. It is going to happen.

Did you just make this up in your head

Except we have to compete with other programs who may not subscribe to this model

The new model is a 96% haircut for a HC? 10,000,000 to $400K. LOL.

This probably made more sense in your head. I would delete it.

No this is legit!! I believe in this model too!! We need to focus on a bright innovative young coach perhaps at a lower level and bright young energetic assistants who can get out and run around the ponderosa and have the stamina and be young enough to relate to today’s youth and chew their arse saban style if needed pay them accordingly to their success each season…. And have a reserve cache capable of being competitive in today’s market!! Modern top level coaches have gotten way too expensive anyway!! I remember Sabans LSU contract in 2000 was a million dollars.

More like 10 million plus a year but just no more 10 year contracts in the future.
That is dumb as hell anyway.
Contracts will be 5 to 6 years going forward. That way if the coach isn't performing after the 3rd year they can be fired and not owe all that damn contract money.

Premise is right but number are off. $2M base with upward of $10-15M bonuses for winning it all.

This statement is ironic because LSU has been the leader in the current model for the past 25+ years when it gave Saban a $1.2MM year contract in 1999. He was 3rd overall behind Spurrier and Bowden. It also included the trend of win a NC and you become the highest paid coach.
quote:
The LSU Board of Supervisors Athletic Committee approved LSU Head Football Coach Nick Saban’s new seven-year contract Thursday, clearing the way for Saban to become the highest-paid coach in college football. The contract, which will be approved by the full board today, will pay Saban $2.3 million for the first year and will escalate over the life of the contract. Saban can earn additional incentives if the team wins various championships or appears in bowl games.

Kelly is due to make $100 million over the length of his deal with LSU, becoming the first public-school football coach to sign a nine-figure deal.

thank you....some people can't see the forest for the trees. The new model is coming.

Now we only have to get all the other schools to join in on the idea

agreed, but do you agree that NIL has changed the model going forward. Who makes the most money in the NFL.....it ain't the coaches.

Absolutely I agree that NIL SHOULD change the model going forward but I don't know that it will. In my opinion everyone is out to get "theirs" and as long as universities and fans are desperate for championships you will continue to pay TOP dollars for coaches AND players. The programs that do this will be successful and those that don't will become middle of the road programs.
I think the trend you will see is shortening of guaranteed durations because pretty soon long duration coaches will be a thing of the past. Think about this madness, James Franklin was fired less than a year after going to semi finals in the playoffs!
I was only poking fun of your comment implying that LSU is a follower when it comes to trend of paying coaches when the model for past 25 years has been built off of LSU's hiring of Nick Saban. We reset the market again in 2021 with Brian Kelly's contract. Brian Kelly is now the 8th highest paid coach with the 8th highest buyout.
Your comment should have been "LSU should continue to lead coaching contract trends by . . . "
