I think 2017 Etling is significantly better than Nuss. For the reason his TD to INT was 16:2. He averaged 9.0 YPA which blows Nuss out of the water. We should've passed more that season. He only had 275 attempts over 13 games.

Carter The Power said that what this year’s team needs is Danny Etling. He said that with this defense and a punter like Chadwick, we would win almost every week. He referenced Etling’s few interceptions

Let’s admit. Nuss has been very underwhelming this season. And it will cost him big time on draft day.

Etling was not better than Nuss. Etling did however throw a pretty catchable deep ball because there was a lot of air under it. But he was awful in the intermediate game. He couldn't anticipate the throw. He was a short pass/checkdown or a deep ball. And right now Nuss has been more of intermediate and short passer and struggled to hit the downfield shot. I still think its only a matter of time before we bring those deep shots.

I do feel bad for him. No running game certainly doesn’t make his job easier and the offensive line can’t pass block long enough for his WRs to finish and get out of their routes.

Why does everyone here or most here have such fond memories of etling?? He was an average qb at best that came after years of horrible qb play. This is so stupid.

I'd take Etling if only because of his mobility. He was a pretty good runner, and it would help the offensive scheme tremendously.

Danny Etling is a good quarterback. Nuss is not.

Nuss, though I rated Etling higher than most LSU fans did at the time.

Because before Etling we had:

Jefferson/Lee
Mettenberger
Jennings
Harris

So from 2009 - 2016 (aside from 12 and 13) we saw some of the most godawful QB play known to man, wasting some damn good run games and defenses. We get another transfer in Etling in 2017 and we look actually competent on offense. Not good. Just competent. So yeah, average in 2017 was the bar. We were starved for average.

Didn’t etling under throw or have terrible accuracy for deep balls? I remember him under throwing DJ Chark 2-3 times against Bama one year and if those throws were on point we probably win that game

Etling.

With this defense, just need a competent, intelligent quarterback.

FWIW, the Vanderbilt loss was NOT on Nuss.

2024 Nuss is easily better than any version of Etling.

Don’t forget Etling overthrew and underthrew receivers all night against Bama in 2017, got shut out by Bama in 2016, had the worst loss to Mississippi State in LSU history in 2017, and lost toTroy in 2017.

I don’t get it either. Our fanbase continually uses revisionist history to pretend that Etling was a good QB and that the fanbase was happy when he was here. Neither one is true.

I was never confident in our ability to win a game with Etling at the helm in 2016 and 2017.

If the season ended today he's not drafted.

Actually Etling's deep balls were very catchable but yes he did have arm strength issues but he connected on a good bit of those shots from 2016-2017. But throwing the ball deep is on average a 45-50% success rate so its not going to be an effective way to rely on over the course of the season. You want to be effective in the other phases of the passing game. 2017 we were reliant on it because we didn't have an intermediate passing attack. We have one this year but now just need a few of those deep balls to be hit at least once per game.

This is 100% accurate. This particular game he was terribly inaccurate on his downfield passes and it did limit our ability to score. But again that is why I have been saying this comparison is arse and anyone saying Etling is better is wrong. When the deep ball doesn't get completed the only passing attack we had was short passes and checkdowns to backs. He could not hit the intermediate throws 10-18 yds over the middle. And if you can't hit the deep ball and rely on just short passes you're not going to consistently move the ball.

We have been moving the ball because Nuss is excellent in the intermediate game. Its honestly up there with Burrow. He just hasn't been able to hit that Deep shot. But I do believe its only a matter of time because he is throwing them and they are much more accurate than week 2-5.
