Rivian exec: Elon and Tesla's LiDAR hesitancy isn't 'fully explainable'

Leaders at one of Tesla's competitors simply don't understand why Elon Musk is so critical of LiDAR.
James Philbin, Rivian's head of autonomy, said the EV leader's "rigid point of view" doesn't align with the engineering realities of autonomous vehicles or the declining prices of top-tier sensors, such as LiDAR, which uses lasers to measure distances.
"I think they have a very sort of rigid point of view, I guess, on different sensor modalities, which I don't think is fully explainable just from an engineering point of view," Philbin told Business Insider's chief news editor, Steve Russolillo, during an event focused on the AI evolution of autonomous vehicles.

Who assumes the worlds greatest innovator and wealthiest man owes an explanation to them?

the guy who had to get $6.6 billion from the government just to stay afloat after the blueprint for success had already been revealed is criticizing the business decisions of the guy who created said blueprint for success.
Incredible.
Incredible.

We have a pretty solid sample size from Tesla right now. Would be really odd for them to all of the sudden start killing people.

Well, he sure as hell doesn't sound like a leader.
No wonder Rivian stays on life support despite having a very good EV truck and SUV.
Don't worry about what the competition is or isn't doing, make them worry about what you're doing.

Then why not incorporate both lidar and optical sensors?

Tesla vs. Fake Wall
Looks like the Tesla is smart enough to know the wall is fake.

Well he does have a bachelor in mechanical engineering and PhD from Oxford. So he might have somewhat of a qualified opinion on the matter

What are you talking about, it ran through it like Wile E Coyote.

Exactly.

Did you even watch? That's exactly what DIDN'T happen. It crashed right through it.
Now granted, this will never happen in real life, but when he tested a lidar equipped vehicle it stopped before it hit the wall.
Each method has it's +/- which is why I said why not use both.
Here is the whole video that explains the differences between the two.

How many real walls has a Tesla crashed through?

My only problem with that video is how he claims people are smart enough to pick up on the visual cues of the fake wall.
I guarantee you 80% of today's drivers would plow right through that thing.

But the comparison isn't between people 's eyes and visual cameras. It's between Lidar and Cameras.

So you have fallen for the PR. Elon doesn't invent or make shite. He muscles his way in, buys tech and slaps his stupid mug all over it.
