Who remembers this con man from the 90’s whose infomercials aired on TV every night?

He claimed you could become rich selling tiny newspaper ads.
I don’t realize that he committed suicide by slitting his throat in jail while waiting to go to trial on federal fraud charges back in 2011
quote:
Donald D. Lapre (May 19, 1964 – October 2, 2011)[1] was an American multi-level marketing and infomercial salesman. His work involved product packages such as "The Greatest Vitamin in the World" and "Making Money Secrets".
quote:
According to a June 15, 2011, Associated Press article, Lapre was indicted by a federal grand jury in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 8, 2011, on accusations of running a nationwide scheme to sell worthless Internet businesses. Federal prosecutors accused Lapre of bilking more than 220,000 victims out of nearly $52 million. He was charged with 41 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud, promotional money laundering, and transactional money laundering.[9][10][11] A federal judge issued a bench warrant for Lapre on June 22, 2011, after he failed to appear at his arraignment.[12][13]
On June 27, 2011, Lapre was arrested in Tempe, Arizona, at a Life Time Fitness center, where he had reportedly lived for two days, with serious self-inflicted knife wounds to his groin. The wounds led authorities to believe Lapre had attempted suicide while at Life Time Fitness by attempting to sever the femoral artery in his legs.
quote:
Lapre was found dead on October 2, 2011, while in jail awaiting his trial, which was scheduled to begin on October 4, 2011. The autopsy report stated that he died of massive blood loss after cutting his throat with a razor blade and had wrapped himself in sheets to conceal the massive blood loss from anyone who might try to save him.

Best con ever developed. Send me money and I'll share my secret of getting stupid people to send me money.

All of those who learned his ways are now busy pushing BYND on X and Reddit.

My favorite is Wayne Root who went from sleazy sports handicapping infomercials to political pundit.

Even as a youth I always wondered how newspaper ads worked if you didn’t have anything to sell which he implied you didn’t have to anything.
Guys like him still amaze me. Something about the voice, look, etc. make people blindly open their wallets and send them money. I’ve known a couple guys in my industry like that. They typically make it to manager or director at a very young age before people realize they have no idea what they’re doing, get let go, and go into consulting or work for the government. People who know there a farce still love interacting with them at conferences and stuff which helps them drum up business from the uneducated. Their whole existence is bullshitting and not ever producing, and they seem perfectly happy with that.

I went broke placing tiny ads in newspapers all across America. It would have worked, I think, but the problem was that I didn't have anything to sell...

The man was committed to dying by bleeding out. I’ll give him props for sticking to a goal.

Thankfully we’ve moved on from these grifters and now women can make a great living showing their buttholes on computers.

Kinda like the made-up websites for made-up companies during the DotBomb bust of 2000ish?
He always reminded me of the little guitar player from Huey Lewis and The News.

I also miss jerking off to the late night phone sex commercials that would come on during Night Court and Arsenio Hall. Me and a buddy called one night but they wanted a credit card immediately so we hung up.
