Starlink Roam

Looking into Starlink for the camp. You get absolutely no service which is great, but sometimes you do need it.
I was looking into the Roam 50 Gb from starlink. I know they have the unlimited option but for 50 dollars a month and not using it but once or twice a month seems like the 50 Gb is the better option.
Has anyone used the 50gb starlink? Just trying to get an idea on how much i would get out of it.

I have it on both of my boats and love it. No roaming issues at all for me even on very cloudy days. Also just purchased a place in rural Mississippi and works great.

I have had the kit in my shopping cart several times in the last few weeks, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I love the idea of shutting off the service in the off months.

Just got it at our camp downriver in Venice. We have the $50/50 GB plan with pay as you go $1/GB over 50. Month 1 we used it 3 weekends:
Weekend 1 - 3 of us there for one night and one day used 9 GB
Weekend 2 - 6 of us there for 3 nights/3days, watched LSU game, lots of social media for 1/2 the crew used 38 GB
Weekend 3 - 4 of us there 1.5 days/1 night, watched some LSU game used 8 GB
Month 1: $55 for 55 GB
Dad and a couple buddies got there Monday night. They have used 6 GB so far. They are all old so texting, calls, light social media and no tv.

I've been on a boat that had it. Its a game changer for safety to have your phone work offshore. And you can text and watch videos if the bite is slow.

I have it at my camp and really like it.
One thing to keep in mind is that you can use any of their satellites with the roam subscription. So if it’s just staying at the camp and being able to easily transport it isn’t an issue, you can save some money and get the bigger residential satellite which is cheaper.

I have a starlink mini personally, and have two crews that use them and we love it. Actually getting a few more crews hooked up with some as we work in some rural mountainous areas.
As far as comms, don’t forget if you pause your plan it’s $5 a month….but you can still use wireless calling and text. I’ll be putting our mini on our boat some this next spring.
Plus if you look at amazon you’ll see the adapter trays that allow you to power it w/ a couple of M18 batteries. It works great and is very portable.

I have the mini for my camper and the 50gb subscription. I’m the only person that uses it, and typically I have service outside of the camper, so I don’t connect if I’m outside. I bought it because my camper is an enclosed trailer and I don’t get any service inside, no matter where I am. I used it last hunting season and never went over the 50gb.

We have the standard at our place. Split it between all the members. They all have a mesh router that grabs the main signal. Works fantastic

Just to confirm, the cheapest marine option is $250/ month right? The roam won’t work offshore?
I’m shocked they don’t want to jump into the marine recreational safety market and offer a deal for like 1gb/ month for $50. I feel like millions would jump onto that
ETA: $250 is nothing for a sport fishers budget or commercial guys. But every tom dick or harry with a 21 ft center console would be a customer at a price point that competes with garmin and spot.

The standard Mini Roam (starting at $50/month for 50GB or $165/month unlimited) is officially limited to coastal/inland waters (up to about 12 nautical miles from shore).
To go offshore with Roam, you'd toggle "Ocean Mode" for $2/GB (pay-as-you-go priority data), but it's capped at 5 consecutive days and 60 days total per year

No kidding? I’m going to find that officially.
So for $50/ month plus $2/gb any boat can have it for an emergency?
The main issue with this is that for a true emergency it would need to be on and working for immediate use and some guys would go over 60 days. But I would never get close to 60 days offshore beyond cell range.
ETA: do you do this officially and it works? The online information including other forums is hit and miss this works. It looks like some of the info is outdated.

This is what I have with the mini roaming. Works great to have internet on the phone and stream tv at night (esp when there’s a game on).
Have the standard residential with unlimited data for the house also.

How's the speed/bandwidth on that, and what's it cost?

Bought it last month for the camp in Arkansas. Works like a charm. I leave it on the dash of my truck and it works through the glass as well, helps in those no reception areas. And due to the sensitive nature of my job, i can pull over anytime and connect the laptop and get work done.
