How bad is our OL going to be next year?

After watching the OL this season, I'm really worried that we're in for more of the same pain next year. The young guys you would expect to get better over time aren't getting any better through the course of this season - at least not to me.

If anything they may be missing the chance at quality OJT because of piss-poor coaching. And even if we completely overhaul the offensive coaches for next year they'll probably have to unlearn some bad habits they're not being coached out of this year.

And on development? I don't see any obvious studs to build around that are getting any playing time except for Curne. And with this coaching staff, that might be a blessing in disguise.

So unless we go into the portal and hire a bunch of ready-to-play mercenary badasses next year I don't see us getting any better on OL - especially not if we're hoping for year-over-year development under Davis, Sloan and Kelly.

Thoughts?

We signed 3 really good OL last signing class. Young Bordelon could be good too.

Assuming we at least keep Alex Atkins on staff, they should all be here.

Adams, Davis, Mubenga, Echols should all be better regardless of what you think about them this year.

Seems like a weird way to disqualify Solomon Thomas who may be our best freshman OL, but has been injured all season

Its not hard to totally revamp a position group in todays era. Look at our secondary as your example

However bad it looks, Kelly will still tell us during fall camp that it's the best OL of his career.

Just like QB much improved by default.

Since we cant develop OL we will buy 5, C, 2 OGs, 2 Ts and a QB that can move.

The OL will be better regardless of personnel if only because we won't be centering our offense around a non-mobile QB

That much I can guarantee.

While you are correct, also takes a lot of money to do it. We are going to have a ton of holes to fill. It will be interesting to see how they allocate the money

Will be improved because we'll have a new OL coach and probably a new OC and scheme.

We'll look back and ask WTH was going on, these guys can actually play.

With the right OC and OL hire, I think you have some good raw materials to work with.

I think Tyree comes back and that's good. He's been serviceable this year but maybe with an additional year of coaching he can take that next step to being pretty good. Curne I think belongs on the inside so he likely takes one of the guard spots. You'll have Echols back as well as a 3rd year player and he's shown some good flashes. I think with good coaching, Weston could tap into his physical potential and I also think you'll see what you have with Solomon. Braelin is just a junior so you could get him back as well. They'll probably take some portal guys as well but, again, with the right OC and OL hire

LT-Tyree Adams
LG- Coen Echols/Mubenga
C-Braelin
RG-Curne/Chester/Solomon
RT-Davis/Portal?

The right guy coaching them, I think, can make this a pretty good group as you have 5 projected starters there with at least 1 year experience. I think the real place you'll have to portal shop is the defensive front.

I don't think poorly of them, per se. I think poorly of their performance this year, but I lump that mainly on coaching until proven otherwise (i.e. actual talent vs recruiting rank).

But even if those kids are highly talented, that's an even worse recipe for bad habits because a talented kid will rely on instinct instead of teaching in tough situations if what they're taught isn't working. That's a pathway to bad habits. As a former judoka I can honestly say it's extremely hard to unlearn a bad habit once it's set in without extremely good coaching and an opportunity to learn with constructive critique instantly applied where called for.

For example, look how long it's taken Andy Reid to coach Jawaan Taylor out of his habit of false starts and lining up wrong with the Chiefs. He's a really good RT, but those penalties make fans want to crucify the guy. I can absolutely say we party when he doesn't get at least three or four of those penalties in a game. It's taken years, but he's getting better.

Unfortunately, in CFB players don't get years to get better, and we don't have Andy Reid coaching them. So - long diatribe, but I think you get the point. If Davis', Sloan's (and maybe even Kelly's) coaching is why our OL is so bad, then that worries me for next year because we still have 5 games to go with little hope that they'll get improved teaching along the way.

Solomon Thomas was a 5* OG/OT that got hurt in fall camp and is going to redshirt. He and Curne are both studs.

The reality is you don't need studs though. You need a consistent group that works together. Hopefully all of the young OL stay and keep getting more reps together and get better.

With regard to improvement, I think we've seen some good from Curne, Mubenga, Adams, and Echols this year. None have been great, but you can see that there is potential. The only OL that really hasn't figured anything out is Davis. He's got the physical tools, but he wasn't ready to start this year and he's been the biggest liability.

With the experience they are getting and another offseason to gel, you could see these guys take that step up you usually see in a second year starter.

The main thing is what do we do at center? If Moore comes back, we're good. If not, we may be hitting the portal again.

It's all about who we bring in to actually COACH them. They're big and athletic. Mentality can be taught and you develop a scheme that can be executed that doesn't change over and over again.

I think we get Moore back. With the right OL coach.....

Adams, Echols, Moore, Curne, & Thomas/Davis is a really solid group to start with.

So basically run it back with the same guys? Can’t wait.
