It’s a young racer of some sort. Where are you located?

Acadia Parish. My jack russell found it. Aggressive little snake.

It also rattled its tail.

Ask grok—- I took your picture and asked..

Based on the pattern and coloration, this appears to be a juvenile gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer), which is non-venomous and commonly found in North America. The speckled pattern and slender body are characteristic of young gopher snakes. However, for an accurate identification, especially if it poses a risk, consider consulting a local expert or wildlife service, as some venomous species like rattlesnakes can have similar juvenile appearances. Would you like me to search for more information?

Baby racer.

I hatched a couple dozen a couple years ago. They are born biting, but are harmless.

I let little ribbon snakes bite me but I guess I’d have to draw the line when they draw blood.

Your dog nicked it. Did it survive?

No. To be fair, my wife also hit it with a baseball bat. But the dog usually kills little snakes like this. Barks at bigger ones with a bark we know as her snake bark.

I’m no expert, but I hear this can be detrimental to the snake’s overall wellbeing in some cases.

Congrats on killing something that would have kept mice and other pest down in your yard.
