At a MINIMUM, LSU will have a new OC next year…so who are the top candidates?

If I was a betting man, I would bet that Kelly gets another year to make things right but he will be forced to make staff changes in order to keep his job.
So who should be the OC targets?

Move on from this... Kelly will get who he originally wanted as OC at LSU and it's going to be Tommy Rees. LSU OC > Browns OC.

Based on his history of hires, it will be another miss.

Tommy Rees and you are correct... a total miss

Bobby P after Arkansas goes in a different direction for HC

Doesn't matter. BK will still be the HC.

If we assume we are going portal for QB and don’t hire the identified QB’s coordinator, we riot.

Napier is actually worse than Sloan as a play caller.

BK has never hired a top flight OC in his career. He has always taken on young, typically first time or only a few years of experience calling plays and trained them up in his system. It’s worked some. It’s failed some but to expect him to do it differently now is not realistic. It will either be someone who has worked with him in the past like Tommy Rees. Someone already on staff or someone we’ve never heard of.
If it is a big name hire then you can bet that Woodward got involved and forced his hand and that has a lovely track record of working out.

If Petrino plays his cards right he might be able to coach at every school in the SEC before he retires.

If you want to win and save money go get Art Briles, pay him $500K a year and let him start training a successor. He'll demand a dual threat QB and points will abound. He's getting older but I'm sure he can still call plays and help train someone new.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago on the On3 board. May be interesting to some y’all. Idk.
I went back and looked up all the OCs Kelly hired while he was at Notre Dame. They were:
Charley Molnar 50 years old. 8 years of being OC between Illinois State and Kent State
Mike Denbrock 50 Was briefly OC at Grand valley state in the early 90s.
Chuck Martin 45 first time OC.
Mike Sanford 33 spent one year as OC of Boise State before Kelly hired him.
Chip Long 34 spent one year as OC of Memphis.
Tommy Rees 28 first time OC.
If we do go make a move this offseason I would not expect the new hire to be a highly established play caller. Just does not appear to be Kelly’s M.O.
I thought about trying to find his hires at Cincinnati but decided against it since Kelly was still calling plays back then and you can’t really compare the caliber of coaches available to him compared to Notre Dame and LSU.
But we definitely see a trend of Kelly liking to pick young unproven guys and try to train them on the job with some successes and some failures.

Had already been an OC for Kelly at Notre Dame.

Gotta go back to our farm team and grab Kirby Moore from Missouri

I don’t understand this line of thinking? It’s going to cost LSU over $10 million after you pay off Sloan, Davis and hire brand new coordinator, line coach on big contracts. You will likely have to pay through the nose because Kelly is basically on borrowed time. These new coaches will want new players and big investments in NIL. This is going to be a total offensive reset for Brian Kelly to go 8-4 again?
