California ground squirrels have been observed evolving their diet due to environmental stress including drought and food scarcity showing a rare case of opportunistic carnivory in a normally herbivorous species.
Even more fascinating: these squirrels have been seen using rattlesnake skin to mask their scent from predators, rubbing it on their fur proof that they’re not just adapting physically, but strategically.
I for one hope our squirrel overlords are merciful

Squirrels will absolutely eat smaller animals. They prefer to eat nuts, but when it comes down to it, they're just rats with bushy tails.

Yet I assume you don't share the same animosity with squirrels that you do with rats, do you?

A Movie board thread could feature the apocalyptic battle film of all time - Flying Squirrels v. AI robots, with laser weapons!

Further proof that living in California will turn you into something that you are not biologically intended to be

You are harboring enemies of the state, are you not?

Hopefully this doesn't change their flavor profile. Squirrels are delicious.

FWIW, chipmunks are mice with better PR.

Sometimes I sit on my back porch enjoying the early morning sounds of the world awakening and realize . . . it’s mostly just squirrels fricking all around me.

You should make that a bumper sticker and sell it. Not joking.

I've seen a squirrel eating a chicken wing on the streets of St. Louis. They'll eat anything that fits in their mouths.
