Is LSU changing its philosophy on H.S. Recruiting ?

I see they only have 16 commits for 2026 and are only ranked 10th. Most other teams in top 10 have mid to
Upper 20’s in commits. Are we putting more emphasis on the portal now or we just missed out on a lot of H.S. Guys this year ?

It’s a damn good question……
Recruiting was going well and then it just stopped.
We actually had multiple people then DECOMMIT !!

I think you save all that dry powder for proven college players that want to come to LSU.
You don’t let guys like Lamar Brown go however.
So spend the money on the proven commodities and only spend on high school guys that you really really want.
And the reason I think you will succeed this way is because if a guy like Lamar Brown knows that we transferred in a junior defensive end, he knows that he will learn behind him for only one or two years and then be able to earn a starting spot unless he comes in as a freshman right away.
The NIL landscape is changing from last year and even as soon as this year. Freshman won’t be getting that cash like they did before. Only proven commodities.

Honestly, other than the best of the best I would stop taking HS kids. Why would I take an unproven kid that has never been away from home, never gotten up for 5am workouts, never taken care of himself without oversight in the classroom over JUCO 20 year olds that have the exact same amount of eligibility left?

Yes they lost two of those Mississippi guys, but that is typical in any year not being able to hold onto Mississippi recruits.
There are going to be PLENTY of really good portal guys with all the possible firings.
Penn St already and possibly Florida and Auburn after they have losing records this year. Also, like i said weeks ago, Beamer could still think Virginia Tech could be best for him. Not only will the boosters open the pocketbooks because he's the prodigal son, they do have decent recruiting in that area that he could own. Also it is way easier over in the ACC to make the playoffs.
I'd rather get into the shark tank with all the seasoned high caliber players that will be up for grabs in the portal.
This is the new way of recruiting. It's more like the NFL. Get you the unknown draft picks (the bulk of your new players), and then grab some high caliber free agents.
You could be like USC and others and pay out the arse for top recruiting classes right now, but LSU doesn't have that luxury. We don't have the insane amount of money to afford that many of those guys. We can do it to several select players, but it seems smarter to load up and spend your money on retaining and the portal.

There isn’t much of a point in signing a high 3 star type as after a year they transfer. Outside of a legacy type that wants to really just be at LSU (Bordelon) who can be a program guy and play in 3rd / 4th year, no point in investing so much time and money into guys who won’t be here when it’s time to see the field.

2 years in a row without signing a HS QB is malpractice.

It’s not a big deal. There are always portal QBs available.

LSU needs to continue bringing in 8-10 players from LA per cycle. History shows us that top Louisiana talent can serve as the foundation to build a champion.

This is a really dumb way to look at it. Like mind bogglingly stupid way to look at it.

In the past absolutely. But not now. Unless they're a can't miss in-state prospect, I'd be fine with never signing a HS QB again.

Here is a good question. HS recruits are asking for an insane amount of money so how much do you spend on HS vs Portal. Look at the premium money we spent on DBs this year... Pickett (HS), Haulcey, Cooley, and Delane. All were worth it.
Now look at next year. Do you throw the money at Bradford out of HS or another Haulcey/Cooley? Bradford will command "starter" money but will he be starter ready?
This is the new recruiting money dynamic and I expect that is what an Austin Thomas function is.

I remember BK saying early on he would build a team from HS recruits and plug holes with Portal. I guarantee you he sees that is not going to work anywhere now. The model looks more like who do we have and who do we need (Portal) for starters next season and fill in with HS guys now. HS guys will be able to develop and penetrate the lineup as the cream rises to the top.

The game and approach is definitely changing. We have alot higher success rate in the portal than we do recruiting high school kids currently. I guarantee you we are paying Harlem Berry more this year than Ahmad Hardy is making at Mizzou that transferred from UL Monroe and he leads the country in rushing. I think you pick you a DJ pickett or Lamar Brown type player each year, best qb you can afford and a few depth pieces but throw majority of money at proven portal guys.

This seems right.
No more project guys.
If you dont hold serve on a fully loaded roster now you have no chance at a title. Everybody likes the underdog story but the reality is the underdog isnt going to win it all.

Probably worked in the old college football but the top players now are condensed on fewer and fewer teams. If they’re all going to be Big Ten and SEC you can’t have as many “young” spots on your roster

They're being picky, and not doing a damn thing with the players they do get!
What good is it to get all these 4 and 5* OLmen and they are not being developed! I love Brad Davis but i think it's time for ole boy to move on! He needs to develop a nasty with an attitude!

all hs recruits are unproven. I would still try and get the best HS class you can fill out depth with LA kids with potential and then go out and get impact players from the portal.

Would you play for Kelly?
