John Hollinger still hates the Pels

Here's his article (paywall) on the teams he predicts to be at the bottom of the West.
He has us finishing 13th in the conference.

New Orleans Pelicans (32-50)
Despite the serial mismanagement of the past several months, it’s possible to construct a scenario where the on-court version of this season’s Pelicans ends up being somewhere between halfway decent and genuinely good.
Mix in a healthy Zion Williamson (I know, but humor me) with a slew of tough wings such as Trey Murphy, Herb Jones and Saddiq Bey, throw in some buckets from Jordan Poole and add Dejounte Murray at some point during the season. Sprinkle in Jose Alvarado mayhem and whatever rookies Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen can give them, and maybe you have something.
Unfortunately, “healthy Zion Williamson” is doing a lot of lifting in this scenario, and despite encouraging reports on his offseason conditioning, there’s no reason to believe he can stay on the court for the majority of the season. He’s played more than half the schedule just twice in his six NBA seasons and has rarely betrayed any commitment to improving that trend line.
Even if Williamson plays at an All-Star level for the bulk of the schedule, the Pelicans have other issues. This is the worst center situation in the West, with veteran tourniquet Kevon Looney imported to try to limit the bleeding. Second-year pro Yves Missi had his moments as a rim runner but was clearly overmatched as a starter last season; ditto for undersized sidekick Karlo Matkovic.
The Pels are also likely to lean on their two lottery picks, Fears and Queen, through the lumps of an NBA rookie season. While the trade for Queen was disastrous in terms of asset management (the Pels gave up an unprotected 2026 first-rounder to move up in the draft), the rookie forward has some interesting shot-creation chops thanks to an unusually advanced handle for a player of his size.
But Queen, who will miss the start of the season because of a wrist injury, is not notably athletic and has struggled to stay in shape, and his shot isn’t threatening enough to play next to another non-spacing big — something that is all but a requirement as long as Williamson is the franchise centerpiece.
That particular issue goes beyond Queen. The Pelicans have zero stretch bigs on the roster after trading Kelly Olynyk and CJ McCollum for Poole and Bey; their only way to play four-out is to use either Murphy or Bey at power forward and have Williamson play center.
On the sideline, Willie Green is back despite murmurs from late last season that he’d lost the locker room. The Pelicans are near the luxury-tax line and won’t go over it; more disconcerting is that they’re also at the projected 2026-27 tax line after acquiring Poole’s $34 million obligation. While the Pels can regain some wiggle room by declining options on Looney and Jordan Hawkins, they’ll have to refill the roster spots with exception money; the Pels won’t have a pick in the 2026 draft thanks to the Queen trade.
Maybe those constraints are a good thing, as they might prevent the new front office led by Joe Dumars from doing any further harm. Once upon a time, the Pelicans had a bounty of draft picks from the Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday trades and a possible generational building block in Williamson. Now they have a thin, capped-out roster of pieces that don’t seem to fit.

I'll start with a couple of obvious critiques:
Anyone who watched the Australia games knows that both Murphy and Bey have bulked up (especially Bey) and really are power forwards. We even saw Bey play the position well and play solid post defense. There will be a lot of times when both of them are on the floor at the same time.
I'm not actually sure that Karlo outweighs Bey at this point. And speaking of Karlo, I fully expect his corner 3 to be a good shot this season. He and Missi should both be better, so I don't agree with the assessment that our center situation is the worst in the West -- what's likely is that other teams with some old guys will see those guys slow down and become ineffective. Missi and Karlo both fit the uptempo style of play that we want to run.
And, of course, he assumes that Zion is likely to be injured. I think that Zion's conditioning this season makes him no more likely to be injured than other high-usage NBA players. Most of us think that his injuries have been the result of his poor conditioning, so It's logical to think that the injury likelihood would decline this season.

It’s doing all the lifting. Zion plays 65+ games and the pelicans probably are a halfway decent, 6-10 seed.
Zion plays less than 50 games and pelicans will be a bottom 5 team.

Is the hate not weird for the Pels? Like it’s just constant from all directions. Like we slapped em in the face. Hate the trade, cool but this just seems personal. Grizzlies traded up 5 spots for Cedric Coward and gave up 16, a 28 First, and 2 future seconds. How much would you have to give up if your moving up from 23 to 13.

I understand our center situation may be questionable but how in the hell is Karlo undersized. He’s 6”11. He may be slim but he ain’t short.

Yeah, bad word to use. I get that he's 230lbs but Claxton & Mobley are smaller than him
Overall, I don't disagree. This entire team is predicated on health (HAHAHAHA) and zion being healthy (equally as HAHAHA)

You may not like it but he’s got a lot of truth in that article. Name me two teams in the west that has worse centers than the Pelicans Also that unprotected first has to be one of the worst “ big” trades in recent history

Seems pretty accurate to anyone being objective.

it is more probable that the pelicans will be bad to mediocre this year than they will be mediocre to good. That’s just reality

I dont want Karlo bulking up if it hurts his athleticism.

Hollinger is spot on again. Serial mismanagement describes both of Gayle’s franchises well.
Nobody wants to admit the obvious yet, but 0-4 is right around the corner. Bookmark this page we’ll come back to this analysis often.

There is some validity to what he says. It's a year we finally get a lot of answers though. Yes, Zion has to perform and produce for us to succeed. He's a max player, so that's not unreasonable. I prefer this over threading water for another year and hoping shite falls into place..

Ouch.

I mean it is accurate.
Zion has to play and play well.
You have to hope you get something out of a declining looney. He didn't look great last yr to me.
I like Messi and karlo but they should probably be your 2nd and 3rd guys instead of 1 and 2.

Don't discount Bey. Hes can be another 3 pt shooting big we desperately need

For someone who is a “player’s coach” this is inexcusable. Biggest detriment to this team (next to the inability to stay healthy) is the head coach. It’s shameful he’s still employed.

I'm just talking about center. I'm guessing looney will start since he is the vet. And Messi will back him up.
Maybe they start Messi and looney comes off the bench.
