BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) - A former Barre Town substitute teacher accused of bringing cocaine to school and being under the influence of the drug appeared in court Thursday.
Melissa Martin, 42, a permanent substitute teacher at Barre Town Middle & Elementary School, appeared in person Thursday morning in a Washington County courtroom, pleading not guilty to criminal charges of cocaine possession and reckless endangerment related to last week’s arrest.
“A lot of us were just shocked, just wowed, because we never expected something like this to happen in a school,” said Sabrina Shea, whose son attends the school. “I was furious. School is supposed to be safe. They’re supposed to be able to go to the teachers and stuff like that. Now she was intoxicated and acted funny. How are students supposed to feel safe around her?”
Court paperwork shows a K-9 search of an unlocked, unsupervised classroom turned up drugs in Martin’s jacket and backpack. The drugs were described as white powder in a bag, under 2.5 grams.
Police were called after a student noticed Martin’s “unusual” behavior. “He did the right thing, and that is part of the curriculum. If you hear something, you’re concerned about something, you say something,” said Barre Unified Union School District Superintendent Joan Canning.

Why did they show the K-9 instead of the accused?

The first thing I would tell any client: No nose rings in court.

In fairness a substitute teacher in a middle school should probably get a pass on something like this. Middle schoolers can be shits.
