"Closed permanently," the chalkboard sign read in capital letters. Vars Pizza closure Vars Pizza on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge shut down business on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025. An official closing announcement has not been made on Var's social media accounts. The space had previously been Unleaded BBQ.

Var's Pizza's name was a spin off of next-door neighbor Ivar's Sports Bar & Grill, with both businesses sharing investors Chad Hughes, Cathy Melancon and Edwin Edwards, grandson of the late former Gov. Edwin Edwards.

Was he in that bbq place across the street? That didn’t last long.

This was the old BBQ place.
I tried Vars once and did not like it at all. It is amazing how many failed businesses Hughes has.

some of the worst pizza ive ever had.
the playground wasnt great and that shitty door/gate would never stay closed, so kids could just run into the parking lot / perkins if unsupervised.

Well that’s not a surprise. It’s amazing how much this group sucks at restauranting. Terrible pizza.

Edit: Just looked at their google reviews. No fricking wonder they closed

Kalurah St., Rio Tacos, Unleaded BBQ, Bumsteers, and probably a few others. It’s truly impressive.

Thought I read on here he was headed to the pen. IIRC he got in trouble with taxes and paying back money he owed.
ETA:
WBRZ news story. Apparently no jail mentioned, but property seized and he owes like $2 million.
quote:
BATON ROUGE — The city-parish has seized the property that formerly housed City Bar after its Baton Rouge restauranteur owner failed to repay a nearly $2 million loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration, The Advocate reported Tuesday. Chad Hughes, the owner of Bengal Tap Room and Var's Pizza, had the property seized by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office on May 23, the paper reports. The Third Street property was formerly occupied by Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's. Hughes told The Advocate that the bar was turned over to the bank a year ago and he no longer owns the property. Even earlier in May, the court ordered that the property be seized and used to pay $1.9 million to Fund-Ex Solutions Group, a non-bank lender to small businesses. The paper reports that this amount includes the $1.8 million loan Hughes took out, as well as legal fees and interest. Hughes previously faced a potential eviction from the downtown bar Happy's Irish Pub in 2023 when he faced legal issues over noise complaints and rental delinquency. A judge ultimately ruled that the pub could continue operation. He was also sued last year by commercial realtor Hank Saurage, who said Hughes failed to pay back a $1.85 million loan and $100,000 advance, The Advocate reports. City Bar and Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's have both since closed.

His other spot, Bengal Tap Room, closed permanently out of nowhere a few days ago as well.

Doesn’t he have a hand in Cecilia too?

He had those bars, but they all ended up with issues.
He didn't start Happy's But that place printed money. He still couldn't pay his bills.
He did get kind of screwed in the noise thing for the patio area (even though he eventually "won" because the ordinance was too vague. When the patio opened around 2008/2009 the building next to it was a state building. It was basically shut down at after 5pm. Plus the state workers in charge of the state's buildings would come to Happy's for drinks on Fridays. The Onyx residence where there other complaints came from wasn't even there in 2009ish when the bands started on the patio. However, Jack did try and stay within the noise ordinance and cut bands off at 10pm when he had it, (unless he had an even permit). I think Hughes was having them play way later.
Also didn't open B&T. That was Danny McGlynn (and a couple others). B&T did OK, but again Hughes didn't pay his bills.
