I need help choosing a road bike

I’d like to get into riding but I’m completely ignorant. What should I be expecting to spend? I obviously don’t want to break the bank on my first bike but don’t want to be wasting my time either. What brands should I look for? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

What's your price range? To get something decent that's new expect to spend about 2k+. May want to check out Facebook marketplace. Lots of folks spent a bunch of money on speed bikes they barely rode and will sell at a good price.

I was afraid of this. Was hoping I wouldn’t have to spend that much. I’m not opposed to buying used, I just don’t really know what I’m looking at. Trek seems to be the popular brand on market place

This is one of the main reasons bike shops exist. Go to a few different shops and talk to them. Ride a few different brands. You can get a decent new road bike for $1200 or so. Winter is coming to half the US so most bikes are going on sale now also. The bike industry is in free fall, tons of good bikes to be had new for a good price. Most shops are still sitting on bikes that are 2-3 years old.
If you ride it enough to justify upgrading, then you will know what you are looking for on the next round.

You can get steep discounts on Facebook marketplace. Once you know what size you need you can pick something up there for basically half price.

Agree with what everyone else said but I would also add that if you aren't racing, you could also look into a gravel bike. They tend to be a bit cheaper and while not as fast as a road bike, there are some good ones now that will give you a lot more speed than a mountain bike or your run of the mill commuter bike.

Yeah, the OP really wants an endurance road bike. The gravel suggestion is a good one and would allow for dirt and gravel riding too. I have a cyclocross that is perfect for crappy city riding (pot holes, rr tracks, gravel) and dirt tracks too. Specialized and Trek are the biggest American brands but there are a lot. If i got a true road bike w/ smooth tires i would want a 2x 105 drive train. That is super smooth and easy. My cyclocross (Trek Crockett 5) is a one by. Make sure you get disc breaks and a carbon fiber front fork.

Honestly, I see a lot of good deals on 2021-2024 Trek Emondas (3rd gen.).
FB marketplace is a good place to look, but also look at Buycycle, Pinkbike, and even EBay. I got a helluva deal on a Specialized Tarmac SL8 off of Buycycle last year. Buyer beware if buying online (per usual).
Make sure you check for the correct size frame when buying. And don't discount going to your local bike shop if you have one. Yes-they want to sell bikes, and usually new bikes that are expensive. But they are usually a wealth of information, also.

Brand new one (ALR 5) on their website for 2k with the 105 group set. Good deal.

I really like my Poseidon gravel bike. Like someone else said, if you're looking for fitness and not going to race, it doesn't really matter how good of a bike you have. Check out Poseidon, they are well built and relatively cheap. They even have some good deals on their previous generations.

Don't you speak those words!
OP, also look at the Trek Checkpoint if you're leaning toward gravel. Great bikes and you can find some really good deals on them, on marketplace.
Also, gmrkr is a gravel guy, and I'm sure if he pops in this thread can help give you some options.

I have a Fuji Roubaix Elite which is fast. I also have a Fuji Sportif. The Roubaix has a more aggressive fit, bars down pretty low (racing). The Sportif has a little more upright style which is more comfortable (endurance).
I have a bad neck and for some reason the Roubaix really aggravates it. I don't really ride it anymore unless the Sportif is down for whatever reason.
I would start out with something more of an endurance geometry and progress to a more aggressive style if you want more performance.

I have a bike I paid $4200 for the components and paid a guy $300 to assemble back in 2016. This was my second bike, I paid $950 for an Aluminum Felt 3 years prior
Full Carbon, dura ace, it's a great bike
But I can only run 25mm tires on it. I changed up the geometry because it was a little too aggressive. Id buy a different bike today.
I was very disappointed with how fast the big chain ring wore out.
You don't need anything above 105 spec, remember pros don't pay for their bikes.
