Could you imagine doing all that with absolutely no ear protection?

That’s very interesting. My father in law landed on Omaha beach with the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc on D Day. It’s a miracle he made through alive. He went on to fight in several more battles such as Hedgerows, Battle of the Bulge, etc.
My father fought with 34th infantry division in Italy and was captured by the Nazis near Florence. He was held as a POW at Stalag 7A in Moosburg, Germany. They were liberated by Patton’s army.
Neither one of these men talked about their experiences until right before they died in the late 1990s.

I recommend everyone go to Normandy if you get a chance. Standing on Omaha Beach and looking up at what those brave soldiers faced coming out of the landing crafts is mind numbing. Truly unbelievable.
Walking through the cemetery is another do not miss experience.
There will never be a generation that gave it all like they did.

He was with a special unit, the 81st Chemical Mortar Battalion, and was attached to the Rangers on D-Day. They really were not assigned to a division as such… but were independent. Other members were attached to other units landing on Omaha Beach.

I’ve been
Standing above looking down the cliff at Pointe du Hoc, we were told about the Rangers that day. Something like 250 men and only 60 survived
Their mission was to take out the big guns, but Rommel had pulled them back due to recent bombings. One man destroyed all of them about a mile from their normal positions.
The reason so many perished was due to the fact they had to climb the cliff with no ropes. They had cannons that fired grapple hooks attached to rope, but had not calculated the strength necessary to cover that distance with the ropes wet from the rough seas they encountered that day.
I cannot even imagine.

I remember my grandmother telling me about her cousin who was killed on the beach during the Normandy landings. From that she said, he was the youngest of like 4 or 5 bothers. When his mother got the telegram she had a complete breakdown. She died a few days later.
I remember she told me hi name. But I was just a kid an that was over 40 years ago so no way I can remember now. I’d love to be able to look him up and find out all I can, or at least what unit he was with.

Yes. Of course but still interesting to see the Germans spin D day on a way that they sound like they were winning. When we all know what happened.

They had some fresh-arse haircuts back then.

My grandpa and his two brothers both served through the war. My grandpa was in the 101st and was at Battle of the Bulge. My two great uncles served in the pacific as an air force pilot and destroyer crewman. I remember my navy uncle talking about a submarine incident but other than that they were pretty silent. From looking at all the docs my grandpa went through hell. My mom/grandma said he never spoke about what he went through to them. Apparently my grandma would have to shout at him from the bedroom door to wake him up because he was prone to getting up swinging.

That was kind of my point. We've seen hundreds of stories from the allies perspective, but if I recall this is the first one I've seen from the German side.

I believe many of the German propoganda films can be found on Youtube... look for "German WWII Archive"
Here is the last one made on 22 March 1945
