No, just save the money and get a better mattress.
My anecdote, bought a "cooling" topper a few years ago at Wal-Mart and it made my $300 Amazon mattress a little softer but wore out within a year and a half. You can get great prices on mattresses through Sam's Club and Costco.

Depends on your mattress and what topper. A topper isn't going to help a mattress that doesn't support you well, but it can help soften a mattress that may be a bit firm for you.
Most mattresses or toppers that are made of foam that advertise themselves as cooling is snake oil. There's just so much you can do to reduce the heat in foam, especially memory foam. The latex toppers, though, are suppossed to be better. It feels very different thought.

First thing I do when I get on a Royal Caribbean cruise is ask for a mattress topper. Definitely worth it

This.
If you have a weak mattress a good topper can help, but get at least 3 to 4 inch thickness IMO.
If you have a decent mattress it's not necessary.

I got a free one with my mattress. The cooling is nice.

I like the topper. They serve a purpose for me. A topper adds a bit of a cushion on top of my medium/firm foam mattress and keeps the mattress from getting any stains from natural body oils, etc. Pair the topper with high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and

They feel heavenly--especially when you accidentally buy a mattress firm af.

Most I have had are very comfortable at first…however, they wear out and get flat relatively quickly.
