A Senate Republican has a list of more than a "trillion dollars worth of ideas ripe for a trim" as the federal government shutdown continues.

Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought has so far announced his plans to withhold nearly $30 billion in federal funding to blue states and cities, while Senate Democrats continue to block Republicans' efforts to reopen the government.

And Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, has some ideas for even deeper cuts. In a letter to Vought, first obtained by Fox News Digital, Ernst laid out a plan that could result in over $2 trillion in cuts to federal spending.

quote:

"Schumer’s Shutdown has provided a golden opportunity to slash waste, fraud and abuse in Washington," Ernst said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "There is no one more fitting to lead the charge than Russ Vought."

"I have compiled a comprehensive list of more than $2 trillion of nonessential government expenditures that should be put on the chopping block to put taxpayers first, make Washington squeal and deliver a more efficient government," she continued.

the reality is if you cut $2 trillion from the federal budget you will crash the economy

Going to happen sooner or later. Lets just get it out of the way so people aren't as dependent on the government to survive.

Cut, then reintroduce investment where needed. "Needed" is the key word.

causing an overnight, likely double digit GDP contraction, for ideological reasons, is incredibly stupid.

now if you’re talking about doing that over a 10 year period or something that’s a different conversation

It isn't ideological. It is constitutional.

She goes from almost voting ‘nay’ for Pete Hegseth for DoW to this. I’ll allow it.

Maybe the illegal superintendent in Des Moines was the last straw for her

Unfortunately, this leads to a communist takeover of the government.

At this point we can pretty much say that Congress is nonessential, so let's start with it. This bitch can start by packing her shite and vacating her office. She can take the rest of her useless buddies with her.

I’m mixed on this. I’m all for smaller government, but too many cuts and it could play to Democrat messaging and turn public sentiment against Trump. Right now he owns the narrative.

What’s the saying? When your enemy is making a mistake, don’t interrupt?

Just pointing out I think Trump should approach this with some degree of caution and not let it steal the headlines over Dems wanting illegals to get free healthcare.

EXACTLY! For decades, a lot of our tax dollars were allocated to shitty programs, in other countries just so that a percentage would make it back into a politician's hand. You would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of people who think government spends tax dollars wisely.

Don’t be a pussy. We are the majority. Everyone agrees the government is overwrought. Make the cuts. Be drastic.

Is this Congress talk of $2T over ten years, or $200B for this year?
