A mysterious "rogue planet" has been observed gobbling 6 billion tons of gas and dust a second — an unprecedented rate that blurs the line between planets and stars, astronomers said Thursday.

Unlike Earth and other planets in our solar system, which orbit the sun, rogue planets float freely through the universe untethered to a star.

Wish it could make a close pass by my house and suck the leaves off my lawn.

Could be a brown dwarf.

quote:

A brown dwarf is a celestial object larger than a planet but too small to become a true star, as it lacks the mass to ignite sustained nuclear fusion of hydrogen. These "failed stars" have masses between roughly 13 and 80 times that of Jupiter, and they shine faintly in infrared light due to their internal heat. Brown dwarfs are often described as bridging the gap between gas giant planets and stars.

So in what manner is Bruce Willis going to save us all from this?

Armageddon style, or Fifth Element style?

I’m not buying it. That’s definitely an alien power station fueling up.

I’m not understanding why the article keeps referring to it as a “rogue planet” while also saying this:

quote:

These strange objects intrigue astronomers because they are "neither a star nor a proper planet," Alexander Scholz, an astronomer at Scotland's University of St. Andrews and co-author of a new study, told AFP.

"Their origin remains an open question: are they the lowest-mass objects formed like stars, or giant planets ejected from their birth systems?"

Because part of the definition of a planet is that it orbits a star.

Probably originated from the emissions of the Floston Paradise.

Poor bastard. With the condition he's in now, he'll just sit and stare at it not realizing what it is.

Shame what has happened to that man, and at his age no less. Life sure can throw us some serious knuckle balls.
