Oregon RB transfer Makhi Hughes to redshirt after 4 games

Oregon coach Dan Lanning announced Wednesday that preseason All-American running back Makhi Hughes has asked to redshirt this season.

Lanning said the team plans to honor Hughes' request.

Hughes was the No. 1 running back and No. 6 overall player in ESPN's transfer rankings and joined from Tulane in the offseason after a 1,401-yard, 17-touchdown campaign in 2024. After earning first-team honors in the American Athletic Conference in back-to-back years, Hughes was expected to be a key part of No. 2-ranked Oregon's rushing attack.

Through four games with the Ducks, however, Hughes' role has been limited. He has carried the ball 17 times for 70 yards and has yet to score a touchdown. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound redshirt junior from Alabama did not travel to Oregon's most recent game at then-No. 3 Penn State, which the Ducks, ranked No. 6 at the time, won in overtime

Yeah, there will probably be a small portion of kids who miss what could have been an NFL career because they do dumb transfer in college. Or because they lose motivation once they get money in college.

How can he redshirt if he’s a redshirt junior?

I know kids want to get on the field but a dude who’s at a top program and then transfers down is almost like quitting IMO…

You should always transfer down/out if the playing time isn’t there. This is your life and career. Sometimes you just need the opportunity to show your talents.
Also im not talking about a freshman after 1 year. More of going into your 3rd year.

Not a single running back is averaging under 3 YPC except Kaleb Jackson. The two primary backs that were recruited as running backs, Durham and Berry, are averaging 4.1 and 5.0 ypc, respectively. JJ is averaging 3.2 ypc.

Good call I could see him averaging 5 yards per carry but 20 yards per game because he gets 4 carries and we throw 17 passes within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Transferring to Oregon sure seems to have helped Dante Moore out

Crazy that they have four RBs with more carries than him.
