This could be a big deal. They supply a large part of the jet fuel for LAX. It could impact air traffic nationally.

Chevron should just de-commission it and leave. Would make Californians and Gavin all happy, right?

Delaying maintenance turn arounds have consequences. All of the plants in South Louisiana have been doing this for a couple of years. Dow just cancelled a big one a week before it was going to start. Glad I don't live near that plant.

Likely not the cause of this fire.

You are correct though.

A friend who now lives in Louisiana performed a study on cost to demolish the refinery 20 years ago. Chevron was tired of all the nuisance lawsuits from local governments

Dow cancelled scheduled maintenance outages for its methylcellulose unit for up to years because it was making so much money. While the Plaquemine unit was profitable, the Midland and German units were always down or underperforming.

A contact in Marathon's management texted me this morning stating that Chevron will likely be able to get California to pay for repairs. In the meantime, Marathon's LA refinery is going to make bank

They did this for a plant I used to do work in; in Trinidad. The land just got to be too valuable for Chevron not to sell off their buffer. And then the complaints forced them to shut down the plant and sell it to someone who moved it to Trinidad.

They are fixing to shut it all down due to state policies so I’m sure they are pushing off any and all maintenance.

Doesn’t refineries have inspections? In the medical field you do maintenance a hour past due and the federal inspectors will act as though you should be imprisoned for attempted murder of every patient in that hour.
