So many banged up teams. I was looking at betting these Friday night games and it's hard to keep up on all the injuries with every team. Just for an example, WVU is down to their 4th QB against BYU. Top 3 out with injuries and they will be starting a true freshman. Their top 2 running backs have been out too.

What’s this have to do with NIL

Jack shite.

Now, could there be some correlation with the transfer portal and guys being in less than peak physical shape because of the time spent away from a program in the transitory period between leaving one place and actually arriving at the next?

Possibly. But I don't have the time or interest to research that.

Some of these injuries are really minor. I'm guessing they get their money and are fine just sitting.

There were a lot of injuries in football before NIL ever existed

I thought it was clear that there are more though. Stat tracker injury keeps up with it and players sitting out due to injuries are up 38% over the last 2 years.

Perhaps throwing millions at amateur athletes was a bad idea

You’ll have some players get their check and sit out a hangnail for weeks like Anthony Davis

Injuries are up all over football. They don’t practice anymore and soft tissue and ligament injuries have risen sharply year over year. You can’t blame this on NIL when the same thing has happened in the nfl

In the NFL…yes. College programs still practice hard, especially leading up to the season. There’s a lot more full pads practices. Don’t think NIL doesn’t play a role with some of these college kids being “injured”.

Oldhead reason is that now college players play for their wallets. Once they get paid, they're more apt to take time off from minor injuries than they would have in the past when they were trying to get to the league.

Again, oldhead answer.

OP makes a unique and interesting point that I have yet to consider. Everyone throws crap at the OP because that’s what people feel they must do.

Had he just mentioned transfer portal in original post, maybe we could have had a civilized discussion about it. Injuries are up and there could be a correlation.

Well he should have explained it in the OP, it’s not an obvious point to understand.

A lot aren't even injured, there's a lot of strategic subbing that goes on these days using an "injury" to hide the intention of the sub. You see this with at least a few backup QB's literally every week. Starter isn't effective, he suffers a minor injury that looks mostly harmless, then he's suddenly ruled out for rest of the game and team brings in a backup that plays a completely different style

And many times the backup completely changes the direction of the game, Texas Tech vs Utah being the most recent obvious example

Pretty dumb take…so the younger generation would never believe this?

?

Old people don’t like change, for example the transfer portal and NIL. When old people speak poorly of these things, the younger generations usually clutch their pearls.

I don’t really think it has anything to do with a generational thing. You know what money does to young people. They definitely could lose their work ethic with a fat wallet. You don’t have to be older to understand this.

In a perfect world each school would have a collective, whatever they scrape up, and every player would get a slice of it. Each player would have a player rating and your portion of the collective could be a function of 1)your player rating at season’s end or beginning whatever, 2) spot on the final depth chart, 3) how many games or snaps you actually played, 4) how many years you’ve played for THAT school.
In addition to actual NIL individual money from Jersey sales, appearances/advertising whatever

Probably not doable but it would keep the cost finite, still reward the best players, and provide at least some incentive to stay at one school
