Someone help me understand why we need that many federal employees. Sure, we need air traffic controllers, food inspectors, law enforcement agents, federal prison guards, and staff in the branches of government. But 2.3 million?!?

I don’t think we need any of those working for the federal government at the expense of the tax payer

Every senator and congressman doesn't need 20+ staffers.

Plus legal teams.

I think there should be one standard across the nation for air traffic controllers, so I can see them being federal employees. Past that, US Marshals and federal prison guards. You’ll need some staff for things like the State Dept. etc, mostly secretaries and janitors to keep the toilets cleaned. And some Park Rangers in the national forests.

So, that’s maybe, at most something like 10,000? 20,000 tops?

Wait until you learn how many people REALLY work for the government when you factor in state and local government. Hint: it is pushing 25%, and that doesn't include jobs that rely wholly on government contracts.

ETA: That's why when you start talking about gutting government jobs you better start building more soup kitchens. The government, at every level, has become little more than a public works project. It is the largest employer in the country by a wide margin.

I sleep with a civilian who is a doctor at a military base. She is good at it and would like to continue. (Both the sex and doctoring).

You don't think we need a postal service?

I mean, we could save a lot of money by ending all foreign aid and cutting military spending by 75% and still be capable of defending our own borders.

Serious question... Are the men/women that make up the military reserves considered in this #? I know one (Air Force reserve) that was sent home this morning from a training program due to the shutdown.

You also have other employees in the FAA besides Air Traffic Controllers such as Aviation Safety Inspectors, Aviation Safety Technicians, etc. who perform an important role in aviation safety. Some federal positions, such as those, are very much needed.

Thank you for stating the obvious captain.

Feds are the only employer in every city. Every State. Every Territory. Every Unincorporated territory. Military base. Foreign USA military bases. Every naval ship. Every congressman’s office. Every politicians office. Etc

It is not rocket science.

American can easily make it with postal service.
Amazon. Grub hub. UPS. FedEx

And easily cut military expense.

Drones are cheap.
Plus who can mess with us?

This would be the absolute easiest government agency to end.

There are already multiple private replacements available.
