Yogurt Shop Murders finally solved by DNA, killed himself in 1999

For those unaware, this was a famous crime in 1991 in Austin. 4 teenage girls were slain (and at least 1 raped) in the back of a yogurt shop. It was never solved until now.
HBO recently did a good doc on it.
4 boys were accused of it and two convicted with no actual evidence except a confession when pressured for hours and hours by police…which was a false confession.
2 spent years in prison including one on death row before being released in the early 2000s due to the dna evidence not linking any of them.
Bullet casing they found “consistent” with the gun used to kill himself. PC on Monday.

Police in Austin said on Friday that they had linked Robert Eugene Brashers to the murders of four teen girls at a yogurt shop in 1991 through DNA.
Brashers, who committed suicide in 1999, was also suspected of being a serial predator at the time, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
…
He fatally shot himself following a police standoff at a motel where he had been hiding with his wife, daughter and two stepdaughters, after releasing them from the motel.

Terrible, brutal murders. Always interesting when they solve cases like this. Keddie is another terrible one.

Great minds. I’ll delete my thread.

Well he’s now been linked to a bunch of horrible crimes so yeah

I’m listening to an old podcast about the guy- Criminology- now- and he was PROLIFIC. Across multiple states- he was roaming and killing women. DNA nailed him for those- so who knows how many he killed that nobody knows about.

That documentary was crazy. 4 guys had their lives ruined by it, in addition to those poor girls and their families.

The interrogation videos were pretty bad.

Plot twist: he lived in New Orleans for a bit in the 1980s

I’ve always wondered how someone could confess to a crime they didn’t commit. The doc opened my eyes to the psychological manipulation detectives use to their advantage

Another thing:
He was convicted of seriously heinous crimes in 85, but was let out after just under 4 years very very early…
Just 2 years before the crime

Insane, I just recently became obsessed with this after the HBO doc. Thank the lord, those poor families.

Man, no wonder Scott’s Tots was an utter failure.

Too bad he didn’t kill himself in 1990.

He seemed to be both a highly unorganized killer and an organized killer. Random reckless attacks/murders and crimes where he brought bindings and wrote notes to throw investigators off. I’m guessing they tie a lot more murders to him eventually as they have his DNA and the gun he used. If they kept shell casings from the scene they probably have the DNA.

Always interesting when an old crime is solved with modern DNA technology. I had written this case off as unsolvable. This is a pleasant surprise although the guy got off too easy.

D*mn. Never heard of this or him. Had to google. Monsters unknown walk amongst us. Glad he’s dead but he should have experienced a little of what he doled out first.

This is such welcomed news. Been following this for years.
Tons of podcasts as well. Those kids were brutalized

So much to that quote. People think they know creeps but we really don't.
Rex Heuermann is one example.

I feel like the parents can finally be at peace.
I do wonder what TX law is on a suit for the guys that served in prison now that they are exonerated
