Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino recently claimed that concert tickets should cost way more, actually, while speaking at CNBC and Boardroom’s Game Plan conference. According to Rapino, who has a net worth of $997.1 million, concert tickets have been “underpriced” for “a long time.”

Rapino compared popular concerts to sports games, insinuating that sports fans actually enjoy spending thousands of dollars on tickets. By this logic, concertgoers should embrace higher prices, or at least learn to like it.

“Music has been under-appreciated,” he said. “In sports, I joke it’s like a badge of honor to spend 70 grand for a Knicks courtside [seat]. They beat me up if we charge $800 for Beyoncé.”

“The cost has gone up” on concert tickets in recent times, he said, and some of that can possibly be attributed to inflation, different venue types, and artist demand. A lot of it is the direct influence of Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s monopoly on live music. But also, said Rapino, the increases have to do with mainstream artists turning concerts into an “investment in the experience.”

Referencing Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour, Rapino pointed out that she had “62 transport trucks” along with her. “That’s a Super Bowl she’s putting on every night. 10 years ago, there might’ve been 10 trucks.”

“We have a lot of runway left,” the Live Nation CEO continued. “So when you read about ticket prices going up, the average concert price is still $72. Try going to a Laker game for that, and there’s 80 of them. The concert is underpriced and has been for a long time.”

The entitlement of this shite:

On the bright side, tickets to his funeral will be really cheap.

Well you already killed the music industry, now concerts are the only money left. Until you over-leverage that also. Good luck.

The reason why sports tickets bring higher prices is because of their exclusivity.

If you miss the Beyonce concert in Chicago, you can catch the same show in Atlanta.

If you miss the Eagles/Chiefs matchup, or the Bama/LSU game - you're SOL.

I wish he would raise prices. That may force artists to get backlash from their fans and find non-Live Nation venues to perform at, and those are few and far between these days.

Legal disclaimer: I'm joking.

Sporting events and concerts are not remotely close to the same thing. Comparing the pricing between the two is stupid.

Just to play devil’s advocate…
If the tickets they sell then get resold on the secondary market for much higher, then they are actually underpriced

Why should secondary market sellers be making money?

That said, frick paying more

The pay for all the players on both teams in an NFL game is over $25 million for one game. How much does it take to put on a Beyonce concert? Im guessing a lot less than that.

You would be correct. Open Secrets Rapino donations. Not gonna lie, this one surprised me. He's also Canadian, so maybe that explains it.

There hasn't been any music worth paying to listen to in about 30 years. There is more talent at open mic nights and local dive bars than he's peddling.

Get off my lawn.

He’s an elitist shite and anyone buying a ticket for these overpriced events is a dumbass. I can see all the movies I want in theaters for under $30 a month and this a-hole thinks you should pay $100 or more just to get in the door for fricking Beyoncé? lol
