This time private equity has ruined (checks notes) fire engines

One PE firm has achieved a near monopoly over fire engine manufacturing. As a result, prices have increased 50% since 2019 and delivery times have doubled, from two to four years LINK

It's a real issue. They are called REV Group. They basically own every fire truck manufacturer besides Seagrave.

Incredibly small fire engine manufacturer but very familiar with them.
Side note: Every firefighter that I have spoken to with a Pierce unit has loved them and a few enjoyed their trip to Appleton to tour the facility.

In 2019, the city purchased a fire engine for about $751,000, with a build time of roughly two years. However, by 2023, the cost of two engines rose to $1.2 million each, and the estimated delivery time stretched from two years to four.

Capitalism gone awry.

Since I clicked on the link how much of that increase is due to stricter California emissions requirements; higher prices for steel and composite materials; and tariffs on imported parts that are no longer made in the USA. Also increases in labor cost if manufactured in Mexifornia.

yep, they bought Ferrara, i think chris still works for them, but it is not the same.

Chris started up US Fire Pump shortly after their non-compete expired. I've dealt mostly with his son Connor on things now but have seen Chris around at stuff from time to time.
And yes, sourcing an engine is almost impossible now days. Only way to get something halfway fast is to grab a demo truck from Industrial Apparatus or someone. But have to know a guy and be able to throw up money quick.

Corporatism. This isn’t a natural endpoint of allowing people to own private property up to and including the means of production; this is a natural endpoint of the State giving a staggering level of preference and protection to the State sanctioned legal entity known as the corporation.

Antitrust?

Citizens United continues to be one of the worst USSC decisions in our country's history. We're only fifteen years out from it, and it's effects are becoming more pronounced everyday.

I agree. The problem is that's almost impossible to untangle in a country in which any attempt to counter that "corporatism" is immediately labeled "Anti-Capitalism," "Marxism" and "Communism".

I don’t have an issue with CU in a vacuum; my issue is that it functionally gives corporations all of the benefits of being a person with none of the negatives. If a corporate board can engage in unlimited personal speech, they should also have unlimited personal liability for the corporation’s actions.
Rights and protections are usually inversely proportional. Yet, somehow, corporations seem to be the one entity in this country that gets all the best of both.

Corporate capture in this country is honestly staggering. If someone irl finds out I’m a libertarian (contrary to the memes, it rarely comes up), almost inevitably, I get some flavor of corporate slavery gotcha question. It absolutely blows people’s minds, from both sides of the aisle, when I say that corporations have no natural rights, are purely a State construct, and that I don’t think they should exist. Jaws literally fricking drop, with republicans and democrats somehow equally horrified

I hate PE as much as the next year, but how much of this is just due to rampant price increases across the board during that period?

It sounds like it is time to give them the old AT&T treatment and break them up.

I blame lobbying
FTC should be able to prevent this type of stuff, but like most federal government agencies, they are compromised.

I am very libertarian and will not go as far as corporations shouldn't exist, but I do believe they have way, way too many protections, the boards of directors are incestous as hell, and any corporation that materially relies on government payments should be treated as an extension of the government.
We have also, as a society, made it so damn risky to run a business as a sole proprietorship or partnership. The amount of dumbass legislation out there that is now purely used by large companies to create barriers to entry are retarded. Mix that with a dumb population that refuses to stop consuming, and we get what we have. The amount of people bitching about Ticketmaster, yet still going to live events boggles the mind. Want them to fix it? STOP GOING TO EVENTS.

Why no blame for the local governments who enabled this?
