Saw a play in Michigan vs Nebraska & Michigan DB leads with the crown of his helmet & makes contact with the side of the helmet of the Nebraska runner. No targeting on Michigan because runner is not defenseless.

How is it targeting on a OL on a FG return after a returner has run 40+ yards?

The ejection needs to be eliminated. Absolutely ridiculous to kick kids out of a game when most of the time its inadvertent contact

It also only needs to be called when its blatant that the defender is trying to behead someone. Like Major Wright against Oklahoma in the 2009 Natty.

That was my bitch about the Weeks call. WR was running with the ball. How is that different from a running back?

Ejections should be reserved for blatant egregious hits.

I also don’t like players being ejected after a booth review.

There should be levels, sort of like running into vs roughing the kicker.

If it wasn’t egregious enough to be called on the field, it probably doesn’t warrant an ejection

Putting your head down because the runner has his head down shouldn’t be targeting.

It seems like the more they refine and try to improve the rule, the worse the interpretations. Especially considering the replay aspect of it. The replay results seem worse than the on field calls many times. Too high a penalty for this unevenness of application. Officiating should keep a game fair and not affect results

Runners that lower their helmet into a defender need to be held to the same standard.

100% this. Spearing has always been a penalty, and it used to be called on offensive players, even ball carriers. Now they call it targeting and guys with the ball do it all the time -- putting themselves AND the defenders at risk of injury -- to try and draw the targeting call on whoever tries to tackle them. Eject three or four ball carrier for that bullshite and you will start to see some change in player behavior that actually improves player safety.

Should just as well be targeting on the runner.

Or shite, teach the runner to make contact with the head and get defensive players ejected.

I would love for the person making the rules to show me how to tackle a 225 lb RB that runs a 4.4. I need to see the example

NCAA needs to fix its targeting RULE

FIFY.
The rule is stupid.
There needs to be some intent to harm someone to throw someone out.
Chester was trying to make a tackle, something he never practices.

Not to mention he lowered his head, but the crown of his helmet is not even what made contact .

It’s not. Neither one is a defenseless player. The returner that Chester tackled wasn’t defenseless either.

For a non-defenseless player, the rule requires the tackler a make forcible contact with the crown of the helmet, and there has to be an “indicator” of targeting (but this part is laughable because if you squint at it you can convince yourself that there’s an “indicator” on almost any tackle).

For a defenseless player - a WR making a catch, QB in his throwing motion, etc. - it just has to be forcible contact to the head or neck area (does not require contact with the crown of the helmet).

The Weeks play could certainly be called targeting by rule, but it was one of those cases where you’d really hope common sense would prevail. There was nothing malicious about the hit, the UF player just put his head down right before Weeks made contact. The Chester call doesn’t make any sense because it didn’t look like he even made contact with the crown (defined as a 6” radius from the top of the helmet).

But the real travesty in both cases is that there weren’t even flags on the field. For a replay official in Birmingham to retroactively decide to call a penalty that is not only potentially game-changing, but also a ticky-tack chickenshit call, is just ridiculous.

The carryover of targeting penalty should end
If you eject player no matter what half it ends after that game

The person who called targeting needs to be fixed. It was blatant and contrived with intent to influence next week’s game. Investigate the person that made the call.
