I'll go Aenima
Lateralus
Undertow
10k
Fear
Opiate

And i love Opiate, I've had it on multiple cassettes, CD, and the album is framed in my drum room.
I actually bought it on the cover alone at the CD store in The Esplanade in early '93.

Needless to say, no mater the ranking i love them all.

Works for me, except I have Fear after Undertow.

I love Fear, but Wings Pt2, The Pot, Rosetta, and Right in Two, elevate 10k above Fear for me.

Hard to choose a best. If forced I’d say Lateralus.

While it is still probably Lateralus, FI is just amazing and outstanding in every way.

Ænima is also an S-tier album, though. Folks sleep on Undertow, but it is underrated, IMHO. 10,000 Days gets better and better, despite my not liking it as much as Ænima and Lateralus at first.

As a reminder, I showed up at the Tool party kind of late (2003-ish). I quickly became convinced they were the best heavy act of the 21st Century. I stand by that. To the point if you said, "Ace? You have to pick - you can have access to all of Tool and nothing else from the 21st Century or no Tool at all.", I would take the former without hesitation.

I had this conversation with the wife a while back. She asked me the same question and I said that it depends upon mood. Sometimes you need the driving metal/rock of Undertow. Sometimes you need the sarcasm and angst of Aenima. (46 & 2 makes we want to stand naked in the sun's first light as I integrate my Shadow. Feels very Anthem by Rand.) Sometimes you need the beauty and introspection of Lateralus. Fear is amazing for sitting in a dimly lit room and feeling the world. (I was dealing with some rough stuff the first time I listened to the album. Cried when I heard Invincible .)

Lateralus is their masterpiece.

Then I’d go:
Aenima
Fear
Undertow
Opiate
10,000

Aenima is their best collection of songs album-wise, but Lateralus is the most cohesive album they've released.
