Moving to Slidell when I retire, looking for advice.

I'll be selling my house in WA state next year.
As of right now, we are looking at the East end of St. Tammany, from Bonfouca to the Rigolets, wanting to be on the water with a dock for my boat.
My dad lives in Eden Isle and owns land on Lake Shore Blvd. Possibly looking at Oak Harbor as well.
I want to be able to catch fish and shrimp from my dock. Quick access to the gulf.
Looking at insurance premiums, they are CRAZY. Is self insuring smart if the home is paid off?
Any places to avoid and why. Any places recommended and why.,

Slidell.
I guess Eden Isle isn’t too bad, but I wouldn’t want to live in Slidell. I’d probably see if you could find a place on the Tchefuncte.
You can self insure, but be prepared to rebuild your home if it floods or gets hit by a hurricane…year after year after year after year after year.

I feel bad for you. I did 40 yrs on that yard.
There is no reason to move to slidell when you can live in missisippi. Retirees have slightly better taxing in retirement as well everything else is cheaper.
You can literally go up 59 or east on 10 and be in a much better position 15 mins away and live around the same ratchet shite.

I would never die in Slidell, what a terrible ending

Look further east. Diamond head or a bit further east to Baldwin county Alabama. Still drivable to New Orleans if that is why you picked Slidellz lots of Louisiana ex-pats in Baldwin County

In Slidell, Oak Harbor would be the best bet, but yes insurance premiums will be expensive. Lakeshore Estates to me the houses are way to big and expensive. Oak Harbor doesnt flood but one time in its history (Katrina) so really I wouldnt worrya bout that. The fishing is great in the fall/spring, there are resturants on the water that are assessable.
Another option but a little further out would be to look at houses in Coin du Lestin off of Bayou Bonfuca and some of the houses on Bayou Liberty. They are nice and on the water but the land will flood more since it isnt as built up as oak Harbor is.

Honest opinion is that every single part of this plan is a bad idea from locations to self insuring.

thanks for all the input.
We have not definitively picked a place as of yet, we simply are starting to look.

I had looked at buying some retirement:recreational property in the area for visiting and fishing..
I understand the locations you have described .. fwiw in Slidell there are a few older areas that have/had houses on canals connecting to the lake.. many of them have been lifted due to recent flooding.. look at Zillow.. pull up a map. Poke around the water.
But better go over to Covington .. you will find a few subdivision that will have bayous in them that will allow you to get to the lake .. not all of the houses in the subdivision will have backyard that are on the bayou but some will..
Also just follow the river/bayou up from the lake on the Zillow map .. you will find expensive houses/ modest houses /and condos .. there are some nice condo complex’s over water… you dock under your residence..
For me I had leaned toward looking at some condo complex’s in Madisonville on water or looking at water with focus also..
Good luck .. I wanted something raised.. look at water.. fishing off back deck.. boats.. but tbh.. I opted to not go that path at all ..
