NFL, Saints say New Orleans missed key deadline in bid to host Super Bowl in 2031

New Orleans has missed a key NFL deadline in its bid to host Super Bowl LXV at the Caesars Superdome in 2031, jeopardizing the city’s chance to secure the game as the Saints and state officials work to finalize the team's long-term stadium lease.
Owners of the NFL's 32 teams gathered in New York this week for the league's fall meetings, and on Tuesday, the Fan Engagement & Major Events Advisory Committee met to review city proposals for hosting the league's major events, including the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft, before recommendations go to the full ownership.
The Saints had planned to submit New Orleans' bid for the 2031 game. But Saints spokesperson Greg Bensel said the team was unable to do so because a lease extension with the state of Louisiana, which owns the stadium, has not yet been finalized beyond 2030. As such, New Orleans isn't on the short list of potential host cities that will go to a full vote of owners sometime later this year.
quote:
"Unfortunately, the Super Bowl committee did meet yesterday and our city cannot advance as an option to bid on future Super Bowl games due to the fact that our lease extension has not been signed," Bensel said via text.
Brian McCarthy, the NFL's vice president of communications, confirmed that the Saints were not able to submit a bid for consideration for 2031.

The next three Super Bowls, in 2026, 2027 and 2028, have been awarded to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Atlanta, respectively. Las Vegas and Nashville are considered the favorites to host the 2029 and 2030 games.
Conflicts with Mardi Gras and convention schedules would likely prevent New Orleans from hosting Super Bowls between 2032 and 2037, leaving 2038 as the next possible target year if 2031 stays off the table.

If the relocation penalty is only $250M the next owner better be local. That’s peanuts on a likely sale of $5B plus. I’m sure Louisiana wanted closer to $1B penalty and shows Gayle’s interest in maximizing the value of the sale.
With the 49ers taking over the Superdome and NOLA showing real ineptitude missing a deadline it appears the Saints days are numbered.

This quote is de facto arguing NOLA’s irrevocably booked with conventions in 8 and 11 years, but is somehow not in 6 years. That’s not how that works. It’s a laughable notion
If the lease isn’t in place there’s nothing to be done for the 2031 bid. But the following 6 years aren’t genuinely off the table if NOLA is serious about hosting

Agree. You can move parades. Carnival technically begins January 6.
We had the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras together in 2002 because of 9/11.

The relocation fee will be lost in this discussion, but LA has a hefty $650M on the commitment for SoFi to the Rams. That was set years ago.
The Saints won this battle as Louisiana wanted $1B to protect its investment in upgrading the Superdome and Gayle’s senior age.
If Todd Graves is not the next owner, it’s quite possible we’re in the end years of Saints football here.

By the time they’re ready to sell that will be $10 billion… even for the Saints

Saints have sold out season tickets every year since Katrina and the team claims that the waiting list is 100,000 long. Even with a string of bad seasons, fan support is still strong and there’s bigger market teams that would love to have that level of fan support. Plus the Saints have a regional fanbase that extends well beyond just the NOLA area and the league isn’t going to want that many TV markets along the gulf coast to lose their favorite team.

Then why were Saints sales begging those who didn’t renew to re-up and extend deadlines. Additionally, Gayle sold over 7,000 non renewals plus other to the brokers at half-off, making it easy for SF to take over on Sunday.
Opposition taking over the home stadium is an indicator of lack of fan interest and a franchise in decline with local support.

it happens to all losing teams though... the tourist markets disproportionately have this happen because everybody wants to come here

A new owner will move the team to a city that's worth a shite

Incompetence runs rampant in both professional New Orleans teams and it starts at the top with Gayle. Can't believe Tom Benson left them to that gold digging whore.

Let's here some commentary from the "non-profit" Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation's Jay Cicero. The "non-profit" who has the job of soliciting Super Bowls and NCAA Events to New Orleans.
Jay's salary, funded by the State/City Tax contributions, was $402k in 2023 according to the Form 990 the "non-profit" had to file.
If we aren't getting a chance to bid for a Super Bowl again until seven years from now, I suggest that we furlough olde Jay and his cronies on staff.
Let the Sugar Bowl committee "non-profit" CEO Jeff Hundley who according to their Form 990 made $935k in compensation in 2023 bid on any NCAA Events that the city needs to attract.
It is such a massive Grift.

Everything has played out with Gayle exactly as I have foreseen.
Both franchises have rosters at or near dead last in their leagues.
Opposing fans have overtaken our stadiums which will cause another mass non-renewals in season tickets for 2026. Tickets will escalate up 10% and brokers get the big discount so you get to sit with opposition fans.
Bags and Boos are everywhere.
Dumars and Loomis are the epitome of incompetence, making reckless deals almost daily in acts of desperation.
Players are uninspired, out of shape, injured and generally don’t want to live in this shithole.
Sell and move the teams so we aren’t paying exorbitant salaries to the worthless non-profits in the region who’ll have nothing to do once the teams are long gone.
Elect more woke officials that will make Teedy look MAGA.
