30 years ago tonight Gerry DiNardo and LSU helped "Bring back the Magic"

'Bring back the Magic' LSU was mired in a six year stretch of losing seasons. Auburn was ranked #5 going into this game. One of things DiNardo did after getting hired was working to get the NCAA's odd rule about home teams wearing white amended to the opponent agreeing. To Terry Bowden's credit he did and LSU wore white at home for the first time since the 1982 Tulane game.

I have never seen goalposts get taken down faster than this game

DiNardo is not given enough credit for changing the culture at LSU. Without DiNardo laying the groundwork, you don't get a Saban.

took them over 2 years after this game to come down.
I wouldn't call that very fast.

not that far of a stretch.
DiNardo gave glimpses of what was possible at LSU.
if Gerry hadn't given that glimpse, maybe Saban would have never entertained coming to LSU.

No it's not
I’d say the turning point was replacing Dean with Skip, Joe Dean held LSU back as much as anyone

And that glimpse Saban got was a firsthand POV from the other sideline in Shreveport. Saban recognized the talent in the area (not just LSU, but the entire southeast and Texas).
What Dinardo should get the most credit for is opening LSU back up to great Louisiana players. Younger posters have no recollection of this, but there was a time nearly all of the great HS players in LA did NOT go to LSU, let alone consider LSU. They were going to (at that time) FSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida, etc. Dinardo landing Kevin Faulk was a program shifting event...even though Dinardo ultimately couldn't sustain the success.

he was cheap....
Bill Arnsparger - $80k
Mike Archer - $88.4k
Curley Hallman - $90k
Gerry Dinardo - $95k
Nick Saban - $2.3M
Les Miles - $4.4M
Ed Orgeron - $9M
Joe Dean's hires in bold and what he paid them.....

My last year as an LSU student. Those were some lean times for the football program. A whole lifetime has passed…

Crazy how comparatively little college coaches used to make. Even after adjusting for inflation, that’s a decent upper middle class income but by no means rich.
HC of LSU wasn’t a 6 figure job until Saban

while these numbers sound ridiculous by today’s standards, not many coaches were getting enormous contracts back then.
the average BigTen head coach made $132k in 1995 (couldn’t find the average SEC salary for that year).
