Is your favorite NFL team the same as it was when you were 8?

Spin off from other thread. Like most people I'm a fan of my NFL team because of where I grew up.

Have anyone changed their allegiance? If so, why?

From south Alabama and grew up a Cowboys fan. Our "local" team was the Saints, but as a young impressionable lad in the late 70's there was nothing fun or enjoyable about the Saints. Now I really don't care about Cowboys.

If NFL teams are allowed to move cities and abandon fanbases, then NFL fans should be able to do the same.

Yep, used to be a casual Saints fan. Now Bengals and Commanders, but mostly neutral to all teams.

A combination of the Saints returning to a trash franchise after years of being an NFC competitor and the sliminess of Gayle Benson using the Saints PR/ legal staff to assist with the fallout and coverup (removing accused names off the list) of the New Orleans Archdiocese abuse case.

Yes, I’m a masochist so I’ve been a Saints fan my whole life.

When I was 11 or 12 years old, I loved the Dallas Cowboys. This was around 1978-1981.

I cried on my bed when Joe Montana beat the Cowboys with the Catch to Dwight Clark. I loved Tom Landry and my favorite aunt and uncle lived in Texas so I grew up a big fan of the Cowboys.
When Jerry bought the team and fired Tom Landry, I became unglued and was no longer a fan. Today, I dislike Jerry and the Cowboys organization.

Unfortunately, yes. Growing up in South Florida in the early 70s was a great time to be a Dolphins fan. Since the end of the Marino/Jimmy Johnson era...not do much.

(As a kid had 4 of my dad's brothers and sisters living in the Dallas metroplex. Was a huge Cowboys fan, too. I've never been starstruck by celebrity but if I ran into Roger Staubach today I'd revert to 8-yr old me)

Yes, because the NFL is mostly for children.

You carried these to grade school, you don't carry similar stuff to work. Changing a team as an adult is arrested development.

College Football WAS the last bastion for adults and alums...there was more purpose in fandom than simply millionaires in different Laundry, different cities and childhood dreams.

i haven’t changed but i grew up a 49ers fan and now probably care less than i ever have, even with a few super bowl appearances in recent years.

maybe i’m just getting old but pro sports franchises just have much less personality than they used to so it’s hard to have strong feelings about this team or that. it just feels like rooting for the Apple store in one city to post a bigger profit than the one in another.

Fans that switch to front runners are bullshite. I also think it’s the responsibility of the organization to carry itself in a way that would attract fans. That isn’t just wins and losses.

I’m a Cowboys fan, but the organization is dogshit. I can easily go without watching them. I’ve enjoyed watching the Bills, even when Tyrod was their QB. They were more of an underdog then.

I can see why fans bail nowadays. There is rarely any loyalty.

I don’t know if I had a favorite NFL team in 1984. It wasn’t until 87 when the Saints and LSU were good that I started paying attention to the Saints. But they are still my favorite team even though I rarely post on the Saints forum anymore.

I watched plenty of football as a ute. I remember rooting for the Dolphins in the Super Bowls because who the heck doesn’t love Dolphins

Great observation about corporatism aspect.

Unfortunately, yes. I've been a Panthers fan since I was old enough to watch football.

David Tepper has completely ruined something I used to love.

Liked the Packers, but loved the Aikman/Emmitt Cowboys when I was 8.

Also was a Jags fan for a bit. They had their training camp in WI, and my Dad knew a coach at the college they practiced at, so I got to meet a bunch of the players. My Pro Player jacket (was a poor) in elementary school was the Jags.

That’s sick. Anybody repping expansion era Panthers and Jags had major street cred at my elementary school
