Trying to plan my next Euro-trip and I've never spent time in Germany besides airport transfers.
Thinking about going to Munich for the Christmas market.
Is this worthwhile? A good time to visit?

I did a christmas market Vikring cruise last year.
Once you visit one, you tend to visit all of them. The best cities for us were Strasbourg and Cologne.

Absolutely worth it but Germany and Bavaria have several ones. Rothenburg is not overly far from Munich and it is a beautiful small town that has the best and most famous market.

Best trip I've ever been on was a Christmas market tour.
Best one - Vienna
Most hallmark movie type - Brno
It was small, but everyone knew everyone it felt. They don't get many tourist, so they were excited to talk to my wife and I.
NVM totally missed the German part

I've been to four of the Christmas markets in Munich. One by the Rauthaus, one by the Munich Residenz (well worth a tour through if you have the time), they have one with Old fashioned theme one (I don't remember the exact location but an easy walk from the Munich Residenz), and the one in the English Garden by the Chinese tower. There may be more that I didn't have time to wonder to on our last visit.
I really enjoy being about to grab some great brats with a little eggnog or
glühwein while sightseeing. Food is good quality and affordable. Great way to relax and socialize. The Christmas markets are absolutely magical when it snows.

Munich is awesome. Never been during Christmas, but the city itself is great.

We’ve been to multiple Christmas markets over the years, primarily building pre/post trips after a Viking River Cruise (we’ve done 7, and 5 were around that season). Cities like Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, Budapest among many others.
The majority of European Christmas markets are scheduled to open between November 15 and November 29, 2025. Early openings can be found in cities such as Budapest (November 15), Cologne (November 18), and Vienna (November 21). Markets in Brussels and Prague commence later, with Brussels opening on November 29 and Prague on December 2. Typically, these seasonal markets remain operational until Christmas Eve or into early January, varying by location. Visiting during the last two weeks of November will provide access to the greatest number of open markets across Europe and avoid some of the bigger crowds you find in mid to late December.

Want to see a "once in a lifetime" event? Got to see Krampus in Salzburg Wednesday, 03. Dec 2025 from 17:30. We did last year and it was a bucket list item. What a hoot.

We took a two week Viking cruise on the Rhine and Danube this past April. The Easter markets were going on in all of the town squares where they have the Christmas markets in December.
The best one we saw was in Prague where we spent three days after the cruise. We also saw nice ones in Nuremberg and Wurzburg as well as other places along the way. They were very festive, but probably a little scaled down from the Christmas markets. The weather was a lot nicer in April unless you are looking for snow.
Munich is a great place to visit but I haven’t been there during the markets.

Not sure if I ever heard about that experience? Did you enjoy it? Those are great locations!
We just got back Sunday from the Viking "Iceland's Majestic Landscapes" cruise starting in Norway and ending up in Iceland. Our 9th (7 were river cruises).

We did a trip a few years back and hit the markets in Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Bratislava, and Paris (meh).
Munich and Vienna were our favorites by far.

We were in Vienna in December and agree that's an amazing market. Strasbourg as well.
Actually, Krakow and Warsaw were among our favorites, they just don't get the visibility the others do.

Yes. It was the Viking Grand European cruise and it was a lot of fun. I started a few topics about it while I was on it.

What makes Vienna great is it's not just the big market by the City Hall. So many neighborhoods have their own markets, that you randomly discover wandering the compact inner ring.

I'm open to other places. Just trying to put together a trip. Found rt flights on American for $600 and Germany is high on my want to travel to spots.

As noted, we were in Munich in December. Another great point is we did day trips to Neuschwanstein Castle, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and took the train later to Salzburg.
If you did, I'd recommend this hotel. Couple of blocks from the famous beer hall, Hofbräuhaus München!
Check out this video!

We did all of the Christmas markets around Starsbourg, France last year.
Took the kids. It was fun, but if you've seen one Christmas market, you've seen them all. My take at least.
Ribeuville was an awesome little town we really enjoyed.

X2 (and kind of on the "seen them all comments" somewhat! I mean, how many Christmas ornaments can you buy? The wife (no pics) might have that answer though!
We ended our Viking cruise in Basel, rented a vehicle, and based in Colmar for a few days the first week of December, 2023. Drove around the area. Kaysersberg was beautiful. Colmar, and some of the surrounding towns, had some of the best "Vibes" of the trip. Note though: It gets CROWDED during the weekend, even when we were there.

I’ve been to Munich a few times, to go snowboarding in Austria.
I would think Munich is probably pretty cool to visit anytime, as many buildings/parts of buildings survived WWII.
Hoffbrau and St Michael’s Catholic Church are two of my favorite places in Munich.
And the Disney castle (Neuschwanstein) is fun enough for a half day.

If you go to munich, be sure to take a daytrip train ride over to Salzburg, Austria. Beautiful town wit a good Christmas market.
