US high school students lose ground in math and reading, continuing yearslong decline

WASHINGTON (AP) — A decade-long slide in high schoolers’ reading and math performance persisted during the COVID-19 pandemic, with 12th graders’ scores dropping to their lowest level in more than 20 years, according to results released Tuesday from an exam known as the nation’s report card.
Eighth-grade students also lost significant ground in science skills, according to the results from the National Assessment of Education Progress.
The assessments were the first since the pandemic for eighth graders in science and 12th graders in reading and math. They reflect a downward drift across grade levels and subject areas in previous releases from NAEP, which is considered one of the best gauges of the academic progress of U.S. schools.
“Scores for our lowest-performing students are at historic lows,” said Matthew Soldner, the acting commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics. “These results should galvanize all of us to take concerted and focused action to accelerate student learning.”
The dip in reading scores appeared alongside a shift in how English and language arts are taught in schools, with an emphasis on short texts and book excerpts, said Carol Jago, associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA. As a high school English teacher 20 years ago, Jago said it was common for her high school students to read 20 books over the course of a year. Now, some English classes are assigning just three books a year.
While the pandemic had an outsize impact on student achievement, experts said falling scores are part of a longer arc in education that cannot be attributed solely to COVID-19, school closures and related issues such as heightened absenteeism. Educators said potential underlying factors include children’s increased screen time, shortened attention spans and a decline in reading longer-form writing both in and out of school.
“To be a good reader, you have to have the stamina to stay on the page, even when the going gets tough,” Jago said. “You have to build those muscles, and we’re not building those muscles in kids.”

Parent yalls kids better.
Mine are excelling.

Look at the countries below that even. Brazil! Columbia! Chile and Ukraine are neck and neck too. Major global players

As a high school math teacher I’ve committed myself to spending more time learning about the racist nature of math and honestly why I am racist for even wanting to teach math in the first place. As long as the kids can do 1+1 that’s all that really matters.

So, educators, and boards of education, who changed the curriculum to cut out books and just read passages of stuff, even through high school? Who did that, EDUCATORS?
And who has been throwing iPads at their kids since they could hold them up, PARENTS?
But I know the solution. More money and smaller class sizes, right?

We all know whites and Asians are doing well. We have to get Hispanics to raise their game. Whether anyone likes it or not, they're becoming a large % of the population.

Does the problem go away when each student is able to pursue their own academic path? The current school model can be improved upon for student outcomes.
I struggled mightily when put into a high school class environment and failed a lot of classes. During summer school I was able to work at my own pace through the curriculum and would always finish 5 days ahead of schedule but would have to stick around since the state decided I had to spend “X” number of hours in a seat. During those times I would burn through all of the documentaries in the library.

you are using the word We...who is this we you are speaking of? because as a white male with white male kids...i could give zero fricks what Hispanics in america score or if they can read and do math. It helps my kid if they cant
only thing it hurts is their vote counts the same as mine.
but as a ton of problems right now in our country...it comes down to immigration. stop all immigration for 10 years and deport all illegals and remove most visa's and you fix this shite.

Teachers union doesn't have time for learning stuff.

Meanwhile, China and India put out more STEM professionals than U.S. by factor of trillions.
The fall of a great nation started when parenting fell. Then math scores. Next comes health. Oops, that decline is underway too.
At least we still have guns.
