Who trashed the Italian stallion, Johnny Musso-FINALLY

Last time this came up on the Rant,it sparked a debate whether Tommy Casanova or Richard Picou
delivered the shot on Johnny Musso in front of the Bear. They had to stop the game and scrape
him off the sidelines.
The mystery is solved thanks to Bear Bryant and his book, Career in Crisis....
"Musso took the ball 18 more yards before Tommy Casanova knocked him out of bounds at the 17 YARD LINE. It was a vicious lick that temporarily knocked out the star tailback.
He tried to get up, but fell back down to the ground. Musso finally got up, but would play only one more offensive series before being sent to the locker room for the remainder of the half"
Then they go on to describe how all the Cajuns were hootin and hollering and Casanova picking Musso up and throwing him into a drain grating, knocking him unconscious. John Hannah, remember him, also describes airborne urine balloons and
being scared to death to leave the lockerroom because Mike the Tiger's cage was parked next to the door. Good times Mystery solved without Scooby Do.

was @ the game - Musso was hurt before the game and tommy did put it to him although i am sure that bama won the game

I was at the game. Musso flew thru the air for at least 10 yards before landing. Bama came into the game averaging 42 points per game. Coach McClendon devised a great game plan and they scored only 14 points. The problem is we only scored 7 on a great Bama defence.

I might be wrong but I doubt it. If I remember correctly Musso avg. 100 a game at bama and in three years he didn't get 100 against us. Not looking it up because thats what I want to remeber! HA

I was at the game as well. We lost. I remember Musso getting smoke by TC. Didn't Musso get up and run a few more wobbly steps and then fall back down?

Musso didn't practice all week.
Wasn't the weather just terrible also.
My uncle went on a recruiting trip to LSU for this game. For obvious reasons.

Coach MClendon's plan was simply put our all American Tommy Casanova against there all american , Casanova shadowed him all night, that was his only assignment. Musso was -13 yards that night if I remember correctly. T.C. was my favorite LSU player of all time, would love to meet him ...

There were several hard hits on the Italian Stallion that day. Picou did get one really great hit that wobbled Musso. It was on the sideline. TC and Picou were some of the best tacklers LSU ever had.

Yes. Like several others, I was at the game. I know FOR SURE that Picou did lay the smack on Musso one time. It really was one of the most vicious hits I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure that it was somewhere between the 40's and it was close to the sideline. It made a big impression on me, because Ricky was in the class before me at Woodlawn HS (BR). As far as I know, he is the only Woodlawn BR football player to ever play for LSU (please let me know if there are others you are aware of). I don't doubt that Casanova got the big hit that Bryant (and several others here) have mentioned (he was a GREAT player), but gotta give props to my schoolmate Picou, too.
I know this is long after the original post, but I had to get my say in.....

That probably couldn't be printed in todays PC world...I can remember Musso as a kid, he was a stud for Bama...

LSU won that game 20-15.
I was there and yes it was Casanova that knocked Musso out of the game. Yes he came in hurt.

Great memories. Tommy Casanova was a great player. Even though I'm a Bama fan, Tommy C is one of my all-time favorite college football players.
Musso was a great player too. LSU may have stopped Musso but he ran all over Auburn that year.
What's TC doing now? Anyone know?

In '71 LSU-Bama played at TS and Bama won 14-7. Others have mentioned the bad weather game. That was '79 (Cholly Mac's last season as HC) and Bama won 3-0.

Up till a couple years ago, he was the last White RB in the SEC to break 1,000 yds. in a season. A guy named Hester took that one over.

Be careful Dad, I got called every racist name in the book when I asked last year. Who was the last National Championship team to have a white starting tailback. its down right hilarious how someone can get attacked for asking such a question when we are constantly bombarded everyday with first black this, first black that etc, etc, etc.

For those of you asking where Tommy is these days and stating you would like to meet him just make an appointment to have your eyes checked at his office. He is an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor here in Crowley. Just make sure you make the appt. with Tommy not Dr. Tom (his dad). Not sure if his dad is still practicing with him. Great family and just good people all around. I have known the family all of my life.
