Virginia buttonweed is taking over

I killed some in July with Celsius and it works great. However since the beginning of August, it seems like it’s popping up EVERYWHERE in my lawn. I’ve never had it this bad before. What preemergent can I use this fall/winter to stop this next year?

Not sure, but I think Dallaswho wants to plant some as ground cover in his front yard.

There is no pre emergent control for vbw
I don't think I'll ever be able to fully beat it. Whenever it rains the water drains across my yard and nobody up the road from me gives a sh*t about their lawn. The only part of my yard that gets VBW is where the water flows. I guess it pushes seed/plant fragments down.

It’s a perennial. It germinates from seed but also spreads from rhizomes and stem fragments making it incredibly difficult to control. I’m not sure if any pre-em helps with the seed part but it definitely won’t help with the other two. VBW and doveweed have been horrible in my lawn this year.
ETA: The thing that pisses me off the most about VBW is that almost anything that controls it also stunts or temporarily yellows the lawn. So you basically have to put up with a semi-ugly lawn in order to try to get rid of it. But I’ve learned two things this year. Two herbicides I’ve used basically have zero effect on the good grass and kills the VBW with a couple of treatments.
1. Weed Free Zone. Even in the heat of the summer. I apply in the evening when temps come down and it has not injured my lawn at all.
2. Recognition (Trifloxysulfuron-sodium1). This was used in combination with Fusilade II for killing Bermuda in my St Aug. But it also completely obliterated VBW while leaving my grass perfectly healthy looking.

You’re done for this year.
Start spraying Celsius in May of next year when it’s young. That’s the only way to have hope of winning.

On the surface this seems like a dumb idea but he's going to keep it mowed good so it wont be able to seed.

MSM you can control it, you almost have to have it mixed and ready to go just got to be on top of it every day, i had it bad but I hardly ever see it any more when i do i hit it with MSM

I've been fortunate.
When we moved in to our newly built home in 2021 it was everywhere. A few years of caring for the yard, all the fun that goes with that, I'm pretty free from it.
Whenever I see it I take the time to pull it out (you know that satisfaction).

Doveweed is out of control this year. It seems like the cold winter put a hurt on VBW but it’s roaring back in late summer

I do have some of that but I'm afraid to use it all over my yard this early in the fall, since we still have a good two months left of green grass. I used it last year and I guess I just mixed it too strong because it killed off a large section of my front lawn. I guess I'll be more careful with mixing and spray it later in the evening when temps are lower.

I did a dose of MSM this spring, and apparently my centipede was still in susceptible "green-up" phase. Hurt it pretty bad.

I sprayed my front yard with Atrazine this Spring primarily for annual lespedeza, and I have zero VBW in that part. Going to try the back yard next Spring.

That's good to hear. I've neglected my lawn for the past couple of years, but I just bought a new battery powered sprayer and I'm determined to get back on track with my lawn treatments. Plan on doing the prodiamine split apps and staying on top of spot sprays. But I think early spring I'll do a couple of broadcast apps of the Clegg's Cocktail cause VBW is basically everywhere in my lawn.

What was your timing on this application? After green up?

I had luck killing it in my yard with Mansion. Have a small bottle from several years ago and it worked very well in killing it.
I took a small spray bottle and mixed it with dawn soap and water and sprayed it. It's all gone. Took about 2-3 weeks for it to disappear.
