Whatever happened to LB's lining up wide and rushing the QB (LT, Rickey Jackson)

Lawrence Taylor was 6'3" 240 and caused havoc with his speed lining up wide, no tackle could move his feet fast enough to stop him from getting there.
Why can't Perkins do the same? He's a bit smaller at 6'1" 225 but probably even faster. Just line up wide take the outside rush and get home every single snap

QBs are more mobile and the quick passing concepts are everywhere now.
QBs are taught to read the blitz and check down at a much faster clip.

Perkins finally has his position. He looked great lastnight.
Why in the hell would we want to move him to edge?

All due respect to our players, we don’t have a guy like LT or RJ on the roster.

It’s not the 80’s and modern offensive schemes neutralize that.
Why don’t we see the Wishbone, Wing T, or Triple Option Much? Same reason.

I think it might have something to do with having to defend read-options and the new offensive wrinkles. Also, that was back when QBs were under center, and a good outside speed rush could get to them about a half second after they planted their back foot. And the QBs were statues. Now days they’ll just let you go by, duck under the tackle and run for a first down.

Modern offenses would eat that alive. Can’t even get away that in high school defenses anymore

You watched the defense last night and want them to change what Perkins is doing? Clemson scored 0 points in the 2nd half.

There is no offense that would eat LT alive. He’s one of if not the best defensive player in the history of football.

Blake Baker is using his speedy LBs to set the edge. Watch some of the film breakdown of it. Different game now with modern QBs.

Are you asking why college players can’t replicate the performance of one of the greatest linebackers in the history of the NFL?
Posted on 8/31/25 at 3:21 pm to Jabontik
That’s called a 3-4 defense and is still used routinely.

just having perkins rush would be a disservice to him as a player
LSU has never had an lb that could cover, play in space, and rush the passer like he can.

Rickey Jackson covered the tight end A LOT

Most overrated player of all time

Offenses and qbs adjusted. They learned how to step up in the pocket to avoid the OLB rush. That's why you see so many stunts, crosses and delay blitzes
