I just watched a clip of the SEC Storied “Shaq and Dale”

Damn if Dale doesn’t think highly of himself. He is so unlikable to me. In the clip I saw, he comes off as the guy who loves hearing others tell stories about THEM while they sit back and get their ego stroked.

How anyone wanted that court named after him is beyond me.

Nobody has done less with that much talent. His ego and narcissism was off the charts. He’d have 15 TD alters if he was coaching today. He was retired for 15 years and still listening to LSU Sports Radio shows 24/7.

The man literally thinks he made Shaq into what he is today.

I grew up in the Dale Brown era. As a teen, I became an LSU basketball fan before I became an LSU football fan, all because of Dale Brown.

Dale Brown remains my all time favorite coach in any sport at any level.

I would argue that Shaq thinks Dale Brown made Shaq into what he is today.

10 year old me loved Dale Brown. The 1980-81 Final Four team was the first sports team I ever grew attached to, and I was hooked. Daddy Dale was like a god to me.

But even with all the success of the 80's, my dad disliked him, and I never could figure out why. Dad kept referring to Brown as a "snake oil salesman".

Then I got older and wiser and learned once again that my old man was usually a pretty good judge of character.

Deep down, Dale has a lot of good in him and has done a lot of good for many people. But he also has a very bitter and vindictive side. If you get in his way he will hurt you. He is like many people who had a tough upbringing, then become successful in that he isnt the underdog anymore.

And over time we learned that he couldn't coach for shite.

I mean, Shaq called himself a bum before meeting Dale Brown and said he was horrible at basketball. He thought he'd just head to the Army.

Dale underachieved with Shaq, but overachieved with a number of teams. He was better as the underdog and his motivation skills were better than his Xs and Os which left some things to be desired. No one marketed LSU basketball better than him though and like him or not, the PMAC had a phenomenal atmosphere for many games when he coached.

Man we could be cousins. My Dad flew to Philly to the Final 4 and came home telling us that Dale Brown was just slightly less arrogant than Bobby Knight.

I saw Shaq when I was in high school and saw him shatter a backboard thinking “we gonna win it all this year”. Nope. We choked when it counted.

You know Dale reminds me of Les Miles.

Even though what the opinions of Dale Brown are is basically chewing gum that’s lost its flavor, he probably had the most consistent winning LSU basketball teams of any LSU HC. The most entertaining as well.

Dale Brown did a LOT for LSU basketball, forever grateful for his contribution. Outside of maybe the incredible Pistol Pete, no one generated as much enthusiasm for the sport at LSU than the Master Motivator, Daddy Dale.

Very similar to Will Wade

Great recruiter and motivator. Average to below average in-game coach.

Hilarious to read this. We are around the same age and I had the exact same experience. My dad thought Brown was a complete clown.

The Bobby Knight quote is about the best summary of who Dale Brown was as a coach.

Brought LSU into the golden age of Basketball.

Despite his faults, his teams were fun to watch and werent afraid of top level competition.

Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts, and oh yeah Shaq all on the same team. Two seven footers and a shooter who could sink a ball with ease from anywhere on the court. Dale did a dreadful job of coaching this dream team. After his failure with arguably the three best college players at the time, I knew Dale was a "paper tiger" and not worth a crap. Enough said!

I've probably posted about Dale here more than I have about any other person. He was the only LSU coach I ever remember or knew for all of his 25 years as a coach.

Complicated man - his drive and passion was almost 100% driven by his feeling that his meek and mild mother was used and mistreated by the system and by his Dad. He always, always comes back to that and the underdog chip on his shoulder is due almost solely to this.

He can be the kindest, most selfless and most giving person ever but at the same time one of the most vindictive folks I've ever witnesses.

He gave me many great LSU basketball memories that will last me a lifetime, but also made me cringe and roll my eyes at things he said more than any LSU coach I've followed, even Les.

He is prone to exaggeration and IMHO half-truths and hyperbole but I do believe he truly believes all the things he says.

As a coach I think he was better than most will credit him for but his attention span would not allow him to focus on basketball much, he was all over the place and thus he never really was the best he could be as purely a basketball coach and he probably was fine with that he was into saving the world.

He was better than any LSU basketball coach before or after. Yes he underachieved, but breaking news, LSU isn't a mens basketball school. Dale is just like our program, not great, but not horrible.

But he's a damn good man.

Vernel Singleton, too, and didn’t even make it to the Sweet 16 with that roster.
