Anyone ever been popped by a gafftop?

Got me on my knuckle today. Quickly cleaned it with betadine. Soon after, got extremely light headed. Though I was gonna pass out but didn’t. These symptoms were pretty short lived.
Appropriately 3 hrs later(driving home) started getting Charley horses. First in my quads, then in hamstrings, feet, arms, back. 150oz of water, 2 gatorades, 2 biolytes, and about an hour later. They finally subsided.
Knuckle a little stiff, mildly tender, but not red.
This sucked!
I only thought I hated those suckers before.

One got me in wrist few years ago, late on a hot day fishing. Kinda like getting hit in the nuts pain hit about a minute after. Arm felt numb and got lightheaded. Started fearing I was gonna pass out and fall in the ocean, my boys would never get me back in the boat. So I laid down and put my feet up on side of boat. One son asked if you can die if get stuck, I told them no, so they kept on catching fish. Took me about 30 minutes before I felt ok. They say it helps to put hot water on it which you can do by starting motor and put wound in the pisser.

I caught one several years ago down at the beach fishing from the dock I unhooked it and tried to throw it back. It didn’t quite make the water so I got up and kicked it over the side. The side fin went deep, right into my big toe. Wearing Tevas.
I blead like stuck pig. Blood all over the dock.
It was like 2AM and I was hammered and high as a kite.
There was no way I could feel any pain I guess.
Only thing I can recommend is a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 and a bag of weed.

Yeah numerous times still have a scar from one that went clean through and through the web of meat between my thumb and pointer finger. Them suckers hurt.
Rumor has it that the slime is a hallucinogenic if you lick it. Heard it numerous times from folks who liked to get high. Not sure if factual or just a way to try and get someone to lick the slimy bastads.

Thats wanting to get high bad bad to lick one of them snot balls.
Sitting here thinking about it, idk if a gaftop ever got me. Hardheads many times, but I think I've escaped getting got by a gaftop thus far.

my cousin tried to kick one off the pier in grand isle. he was wearing flip flops. got him between the toes. he was sufficiently drunk that he didnt cry too hard

Had one go through my middle finger. Instinctively I slung my hand and it came out but then it swung out on my fishing line and came back and stuck me in my thigh. Pulled it out and dropped everything and ran to the other side of the boat. I was fishing in the back of the boat and my dad couldn’t figure out wtf was going on.

Don’t try it, the origin of that myth was an April fools article in marlin magazine. I remember vividly reading that article sitting on the jon at a friends camp in grand isle circa some time in the late 90’s. I thought I had found the holy grail of grand isle party favors. We tried licking those slimy bastards and nothing happened. It was years later that I read it was an April fools article, they got me good! I have a picture of one of my friends with a baby gaftop in his mouth, priceless ??

I had one flip back at me off the hook and go straight into my calf. Lost a shite ton of blood, lost vision, felt sick, nearly passed out.
Apparently these fricks have some sort of neurotoxin in their slim that cause you to bleed profusely, lose vision, feel sick, pass out. I initially those all those symptoms were from blood loss.

If a gaftop sticks you, you are supposed to lick it to keep those symptoms from occurring.

Been hit several times. One time the spawn of devil was only inches long and was holding the jig head and it poked me right through my pointing finger. I just cut the line now and re- tie.

Dropped one that I was unhooking at Grand Isle and the fin point went through my boat shoe, and deep into my big toe. Had to just grab it and yank it out and bled like crazy. Painful as hell.
