This is ridiculous for a few reasons but the biggest issue with this is that these parents are essentially asking to regulate OpenAI as if its SUPPOSED to "parent" their kids.
We're going to get shitty nerfed hyper regulated AI because people cannot do basic things or have basic common sense.

So...Basically like every mainstream internet service already. Google gives you help warnings and ridiculously filtered results for damn near everything already.
Humans aren't meant to have computer friends that do nothing but validate anything and everything.

Are they suing themselves for being shitty parents?

Good. The tech bro dystopia that we are currently living in and their horrid views for the future are bad news for us mere plebs.
frick the tech bros. Uncle Ted was right.

IIRC, I think their suit alleges that the chatbot basically did not follow its own parameters and at times even encouraged the kid to kill himself. Like the kid submitted pictures of nooses to let the AI examine it and tell him how to make it better.
I don't disagree with you at a base level, but supposedly the chatbot wasn't operating properly and the kid was able to basically trick it into continuing the conversations down some darker paths.
I'm not sure what the fix is either. But I do know that had this kid not had access to his computer (or was it a phone?) that he wouldn't have been able to access the chatbot and discuss all of these things. So that part is definitely on the parents.

AI is programmed by someone. Do you think AI should be encouraging someone to commit suicide?

Do parents sue google when kids google how to kill themselves?

Open AI provided the number for a suicide
hotline 45 times and asked him to call each time.
If this suit is won by the parents my guess is Open AI will automatically call the hotline and report from here on out.
I think the lawsuit is ridiculous.

The entire point of artificial intelligence is that it learns, adapts and changes.
I think in a few years, we will look back on a time where AI “only” encouraged people to commit suicide as the good ole days.

One reply made so much sense.
There has to be a check and balance for this.

Relying on AI for life guidance should be grounds for having one committed to a mental institution. As should wanting to cut off or bolt on a penis.

Call me crazy but an AI platform should not be allowed to tell people how to kill themselves nor encourage them to do so.

ok, well… that’s horrific
They should pay them.
They should pay them.

In fact AI is incapable of remembering and it does not learn. Every piece of data returned is independent of past replies. All of the AI models have been caught contradicting themselves. AI is turning out to be an expensive joke.
The air is hissing out of the overinflated AI balloon

Current models, perhaps. It’s early.
