Google has warned Gmail users that a notorious group of hackers is targeting account holders after gaining access to a massive database.

The attacks stem from a breach of Salesforce’s cloud platform that exposed users of Google services to further intrusions.

With around 2.5 billion people using Gmail and Google Cloud, users have been advised to be on high alert to suspicious activity and to take appropriate security action to better protect themselves.

Google advises users to regularly update their passwords and to use extra security measures like two-factor authentication.

Data from Google shows that the majority of users have unique or strong passwords, however only a third of them regularly update their passwords.

So is this contained to Salesforce users or larger databases?

password hack

sounds like a preemptive warning for potential phishing attempts, doesn't read like there has been a password breach for billions

Good catch. So it's probably just the emails and not the passwords.

I get daily emails from Microsoft on my personal Gmail account for the password code, and i have no MS accounts associated with that email

Yeah it seems like they’re warning about possible new phishing attempts.

I did get a phishing attempt just yesterday that was a fake confirmation for a $400 purchase through my Paypal that looked more convincing than the usual ones I get. Reported and deleted. No activity on my Paypal, but I'm guessing the attempt was related to this.

PayPal is notorious for being hacked. Have had to change my password on there no fewer than 5 times

Maybe they should start separating these giant user Db.. They get hacked all the time. At least make them work a little harder than 1 and done.

It's definitely harder than that. Companies like Salesforce are getting hit basically every second of every day.

Always verify sender email address before opening messages and especially before responding in any way to, or opening links in, unsolicited emails.

If you have any doubt at all, just delete the message.

I just earlier today saved a friend from a very convincing phishing attempt.

We got hit yesterday. An employee clicked on the link and it grabbed his entire SENT mailbox and promptly emailed everyone internal and external he has ever emailed.

IT has already said this will mean all of our systems and databases will now be going to multi factor authentication. This will be yours out of my week logging in and verifying every time I need to use one of our systems. Joy!

99.9% of my emails is useless. I almost never even open an email. I just use it to sign up for sites.

I thought this advice meant do not click on any links or pdf within the email.

It’s not safe to even just open the email?

I've received multiple phishing attempts over the last two days.

All but 1 took the form of a fake digital signing of something or another.

Certain government contractors working for Fed depts. use Salesforce. Especially bidding sites and 3rd party administrative (e.g. HUD contracted inspectors).

First AT&T, now this crap. These companies need to do a better job of protecting people’s info.
