Can some one recommend a good shade tree for the Baton Rouge area that does not grow super large, is freeze resistant, and is not an oak ?

same thing as swamp red maple? If so, that’s what I’d plant

I had an Arizona Ash in the yard of my first home and it was lovely. Plan to put one in where my last pecan tree is when it finally splits in half. The downside to a grafted pecan tree.

Japanese flowering cherry trees are pretty easygoing and for a few weeks each year they are positively gorgeous.

Some pruning in its first few years to help shape it is all that’s really required.

The only rub is they are somewhat short lived. Most make it only 10-20 years. IMHO, the Kwanzan variety or the Okame are the most visually striking.

Its a different tree but swamp red is another good choice.

You sure that's what you had because that's not a good tree for BR. Texas Ash or Green Ash do much better in BR although they are big trees.

Sweetbay magnolia for full sun - evergreen. Pawpaw trees are pretty if you can put them in a shady area until about 3 years old then plant in full sun - deciduous.

That’s a great choice. I planted some southern crabapples along my driveway and if those get blight again like they did this year I’m replacing with some southern sugar maples.
