SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Louisiana’s Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser is advocating for a ten-cent per pound inspection fee on all imported seafood, following reports of radioactive shrimp from Indonesia being sold in Walmart stores across the South.

On Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned the public about California-based Southwinds Foods’ “voluntary” recall of select imported frozen shrimp products due to possible contamination with radioactive isotope cesium-137.

The shrimp was distributed between July 17 and 18 by an Indonesian food processing company and sold in Walmart stores in 12 states, including Louisiana. On Friday, the FDA updated the advisory announcing that PT. Baharis Makmur Sejati, the shrimp producer, was “in violation of the Federal FD&C Act,” and said an FDA investigation was ongoing.

In response to the recall, Nungesser sent a letter to President Donald Trump and Louisiana’s congressional delegation, urging them to support the proposed fee. He believes that this fee would enhance oversight of imported seafood and protect the health of American families.

Nungesser, the son of a Louisiana shrimper, has been a champion for Gulf shrimp and has highlighted the need for more oversight and transparency measures, including restaurants noting when imported shrimp is on the menu.

“Several years ago, I got them all to support a resolution asking the federal government. To impose a 10-cent-per-pound inspection fee. We inspect less than 10% of the imported seafood. A lot of that is rejected, chock-full of antibiotics or full of bacteria. It’s unhealthy,” Nungesser said during an interview with NBC 6 in April.

The renewed call for the inspection fee comes after the radioactive shrimp recall was announced.

An inspection fee could lead to increased scrutiny of imported seafood, potentially preventing future incidents similar to the radioactive shrimp reports. The response from federal officials and the impact on seafood imports remain to be seen.

Hilarious that we are taking health advice from a guy who is so obese he hasn't seen his dick in probably three decades.

While there is irony in that, he's not wrong that imported seafood should be scrutinized WAY much more than it currently is.

If you're buying your frozen shrimp at Walmart to save $3...

you probably don't care where it came from

I mean agreed, but why not work on making local seafood less expensive than constantly adding taxes to everything else. Local beef, pork, fish, ect is so damn expensive nowadays, it's literally cheaper to bring it in from halfway around the world. That is insane.

I remember about 15 years ago on local news there was this crawfisherman bitching and moaning about people buying Chinese crawfish. He said people should pay a little extra to support local etc etc. They interviewed him on his boat.

His boat had a real nice Suzuki motor…..

While humorous, the concept of your logic is flawed and plainly ignorant. You can understand something and not be a practitioner of it. So Nungesser is overweight and probably unhealthy, does that mean he can’t do his job? Hey there is radioactive shrimp coming from overseas, what should we do? Idk, I’m too fat to make a decision smh.

Just call it a tariff and many on this board will support it and tell you it's not going to end up coming out your pocket.

I very much dislike Nungesser for his handling of many of the coastal projects here in LA.

I am fully in support of this initiative. I want to see where the money will actually go, but SE Asian seafood is toxic and needs to be tested way more than it is.

When shopping for seafood, buy American. Don’t do it because you’re a patriot or because “America, frick yeah!” but do it because American seafood is inarguably better quality and healthier than SE Asian seafood. Also the SE Asians frick up the fisheries with gross over fishing.

Are there excessive taxes on seafood and meat raised in LA, or is it just the price that the fisherman and farmers are charging?

It’s not really them. It’s the middlemen.

Especially with seafood, buying directly off the dock or at a stall is very price friendly.

The shrimpers are selling for $3/lb to the wholesalers, and they retail for $10.

Not sure what we can do with 10 cents per pound

I would be fine just banning all of it until they clean up their act

Well, with the explosion in Tangi, we have our own food and water sources to be concerned with. He’d best get on the ball and make someone pay dearly. We will be contaminated for years. Who cares about radioactive shrimp atm. Can’t be any worse.
