A timeline of Reddit becoming a Left wing echo chamber

This article explores how Reddit went from Libertarian free speech site to a censored Left wing echo chamber:

Left wing political comments are found in every sub-reddit in my experience.

Reddit’s evolution from an anti-establishment, tech-libertarian playground to one of the most aggressively left-wing platforms online is no accident. What started in 2005 as a decentralized, hands-off community where anything went—besides spam—has become a moderator-controlled political bubble, where dissent from progressive orthodoxy often leads to bans, shadow removals, or outright subreddit purges.
Left wing political comments are found in every sub-reddit in my experience.

That's a very accurate article.
The first years of reddit it was essentially a slightly less insane 4chan.
Focus was primarily on having fun and being irreverent, politics wasn't even that prominent, when it came up it the consensus opinion was very libertarian in general. Most people there were not fans of the left or right.
Most subreddits had very light moderation, lots of subreddits on taboo topics, etc.
The owners of the site were lefties though and as it grew they got more media and political pressure to "clean up" the site. There were about 3 major purges over the past 10 years and each one pushed the site further left.
A very small cabal of "power mods" control all the high traffic subreddits and every single one enforces the same left wing orthodoxy.

How Left-Wing Is Reddit Today?
A 2016 Pew study found that Reddit’s user base was 43% liberal, 38% moderate, and 19% conservative. By 2021, studies from the American Political Science Review indicated that the conservative share had dropped significantly, largely due to bans, moderation trends, and self-selection.
The removal of right-leaning subreddits accelerated this process:
r/The_Donald (Banned in 2020)
r/GenderCritical (Banned for “hate speech” against trans activism)
r/Conservative (Heavily restricted)
Meanwhile, progressive subreddits like r/SandersForPresident thrived. A 2024 study found that pro-Trump or anti-LGBT content is virtually nonexistent in Reddit’s top posts, reinforcing the left-wing shift.

In other words, 81% liberal, 19% conservative.
It's why I would NEVER over the past 20 years have an account there. It still has great and helpful 'subs' (aka. this site's 'forums') but not enough for me to post on.

I agree 100% with everything in that article. So this next sentence isn’t a disagreement or critique on it, only a comment on the state of our media…
But I’m 99% sure that article was written by ChatGPT. The writing style, the short siloed segments, and the excessive use of bolded words all feel like they are straight from ChatGPT. I’m pretty sure the author just typed “give me a timeline of reddit becoming a left wing echo chamber” and copy and pasted the results over to his editor.

reddit is gay, and any state sub or city sub is literally 75% bots posting about trump. its ridiculous and completely inorganic.
in 2013 reddit accidentally posted a list of cities with most reddit users and Pensacola/Eglin AFB was like #3 in the country . Hmm.
theres still a couple of good subs around but anything over 100,000 users is automatically some gay liberal bullshite

I really hope that generative AI marginalizes sites like Reddit.

That’s 2016 though, and before the mass censorship. The large scale censoring started when Trump won. Now it’s 97% Leftist and 3% Liberal, and all moderates, libertarians, conservatives, and quite frankly anyone to the right Joe Biden have been banned.

Not disagreeing that it has become that but hasn’t this place become a right wing echo chamber too?

I've actually never cared about reddit. The layout is odd and it's just too big for my taste.

People keep saying this despite being proven wrong every time. It's like people want this to be an echo chamber so they can justify most others not liking their bad opinions.

You’re not banned for being a Leftie here.

If you haven’t been banned by Reddit you aren’t trying.

I jump on occasionally and add shocking (to them) male thought/advice. For instance one guy was having issues with his roomate being disrespectful and threatening. I asked "have you considered beating the shite out of him? that's the fastest way to teach another male respect."
I suggested that a daughter and her husband were the problem when they wouldn't help her "boomer" parents move because her dad wouldn't hire a moving company, suggesting that her dad was a badass and she should show some gratitude for his sacrifices raising and supporting her and get her husband off his arse and help whether she thought he could afford a moving company or not.
My comments are always reported and generally deleted, but the message gets to its target and hopefully it puts a nagging thought in the back of their mind that maybe they're being a pussy.

Haven’t read the article but the political subs were very pro Bernie, anti Hillary. Soon after they rigged the primary for her they purged the mods on r/politics overnight and the site started its spiral into what it is today.

I read reddit every now and again just to remind myself that if I ever have to go before a jury, I'll be judged by a bunch of rural white crackers and black folk who pin their ears back and go to work everyday (jury duty doesn't pay enough to get the govt check collectors off their couch.)

I got threatened with a perma ban for linking to a Twitter / X tweet on an MLB team subreddit because they apparently hate Musk and refuse to let people reference his platform.
That was it for me havent been on there since.

I go and lurk on Reddit because its a good site to learn about stuff but I never comment because it is so dmn toxic.
