My current active licenses. (Expire the day before dove season)

quote:

Item # Item Description Quantity Year Valid From Valid To
107 Nonresident Special Small Game/Exotic Hunting 1 2025 08/27/2024 08/31/2025
168 Migratory Game Bird Endorsement 1 2025 08/27/2024 08/31/2025
137 HIP Certification 1 2025 08/27/2024 08/31/2025

Bold license is no longer available. That allowed a non-resident to hunt dove, quail, ducks and geese all season for $150.

You can buy a Non-resident small game 5 day pass for $48 or Non-Resident Full season package including deer and turkey for $315.

Between dove, quail, ducks and geese I hunt in TX 6+ times a year, so I now have to pay double since 6 trips at $50 per pass would be the same price as full package with deer tags too.

I called customer support, and yes, Non-Resident all year small game has been removed.

You can buy non-resident small game 5 day pass for $48, or full Non-Resident package for $315 which does include deer.

Wouldn't be a problem if I only dove hunted opening day, but I hunt opening day of dove, 3rd weekend of September for dove, and between Thanksgiving and February 28th I go 3-5 weekends for quail with a duck and goose hunt or two sprinkled in somewhere.

So, I can buy $48 dollar one 6 times, or $315 and get deer tags too. The problem is I don't have a place to deer hunt in TX.

fricking gut punch. I use to get small game all year for $150, now it's doubled.

Texas is looking for ways to raise more money through licenses and it shows

Just read an article last week about how our game wardens are helping out with major increased foot traffic at state parks but yet there is very little increased income due to most parks being free. Since covid, state park traffic in Texas has nearly doubled but the budget remains the same. Because hunting/fishing licenses fund TPWD, they are trying to raise prices and get more people to purchase licenses to help alleviate the financial strain that the parks issue is causing

Why would they include deer in in a "small game" license? Terrible terminology imo.

Just call it a Non Resident Hunting license. If you need a "stamp" or add on for something else, explicitly state that.

I don't think that's terrible fwiw, $48 or twice at $48 solves most non residents needs.

They don't. Nonresident small game allowed you to hunt everything but deer and turkey all season long for $150.

That option has been removed and you only have two options now.

Nonresident small game 5 day pass for $48 which is everything but deer and turkey 5 days per purchase.

Or general nonresident hunting which includes everything for $315.

I bird hunt/wing shoot only in TX multiple times per year. My only option has now doubled my annual cost because of the change. I never got deer tags in TX because I deer hunt in LA. ( For the record, I know my description of what's going on is clear as mud.)

To paraphrase, for the last 20 years I bird hunted multiple times a year in TX for $150/year. Now it will cost me $315 and I get deer tags I won't use.

They do. There are other cost like migratory bird permit, duck stamps(1 time purchase) and $5 convenience fee each transaction.

I bird hunt in TX a minimum of 5 weekends per season. Sometimes 6, 7 or more if my spots are good, we have water, etc.. I just don't have deer or turkey hunting rights on the property I bird hunt. Those are sub-leased to a group of guys out of Dallas.

ETA: This is what I have to buy to hunt in TX like I typically do. It used to cost $150...

Private land?

What is the fine for hunting dove without a license? Google says $465...no idea how long ago that was or accurate.

Also don't know how the federal side of things works. Get a migratory stamp in LA and have it work for tx too?

If it really is only $465, obviously you're better off winging it.

I really don't think a federal charge is worth saving the $100.

I enjoy hunting too much to ever risk a federal charge.

A good friend of mine got popped years ago for baiting doves.

Paid his fines but lost his hunting privileges for one season. He said that was the hardest thing to swallow.

Love the Senior fishing fees though if you are a senior fisher in La.

For my son to hunt our land that we own in MS is almost $500.

I can’t buy him a lifetime because I wasn’t born in MS.

I bought a lifetime license when I moved from MS to TN.
They’re shouldn’t be some sort of carve out if you own the land you are hunting.
