Thoughts on how they addressed the issue? Was it more scheme or personnel? Assume Perkins at Star will shadow the QB more?

I'd imagine both.

We used to be so good at it.

Personally I’ve always been a fan of a full shadow by our most athletic LB. Works everytime against a running QB.

D line also has to fan out and contain.
Make the running QB throw the ball.

We did it against A&M when Johnny manziel was there and it worked like a charm

probably a bit of both....but when none of our DL were demanding a double team, and the OL is going 1on1 with the DL, that frees up other OL to get to the 2nd level and block your LB's. so having guys that win 1on1 on our DL will be a huge improvement.

add to that, guys like perkins and weeks with less blockers to shed and the ability to just go get the ball, should help in that aspect. but elusive QB's are just that, elusive, so you need guys that run them down..........Perk should shine in this, especially if Gooden/McKinley/Reliford are eating up OL and/or getting penetration with some containment.

Can always remember the Lamar bowl game after the year he had. Have Perk dedicated to the QB spy and contain on the DL

Baker said they have changed some things up scheme-wise to try to address it. We’ve also significantly upgraded our defensive line IMO with Pyburn and Gooden as well as Breaux / McKinley being a year older. I think we’ll be much better defending all running threats this year.

Chavis was great at it.

Well, except for one game at Auburn.

Both Manziel and Lamar Jackson come to mind as elite and slippery runners at QB that LSU completely shut down. My, how we have fallen.

DE’s have to be sound on containment.

Don't rush upheld and hold your lanes! If you do you will pay for it! Keep him in the pocket and make him beat ys throwing. In the past we had the dbs to do this. Last 4 years not so much. No play makers and dept on the DL etc. Its a bunch of things

Big problem with last years Defense is the team just did not have the players to execute. They didn't have the talent/depth or discipline.

Putting a spy on the QB leaves opportunity for the passing game. I'm not saying it's a terrible option but a "good" QB/OC will capitalize against it.

Having the D-line fan out or contain is a better solution. Last season LSU didn't have a D-line or support that remained disciplined. The D-line over perused & support did not remain in their gaps or refused to tackle.

Monte Kiffin spoke to this while he was at the Buc's. D-line has to contain. Support has to stay in their gap. Kiffin's defenses were really good at stopping mobile QB's like Michael Vick & others.

The additions on the D-line & the backend bring to legitimacy to the squad. P&G (ON) I don't think this years team will be as suspect against a mobile QB.

Set. The. Damn. Edge.

Our DEs and Linebackers were so over aggressive last season that they would just run themselves out of the play. The QB and offense were basically playing 11 on 8 last season.

The DE transfer from Florida is supposed to be great at this. He’s not a pass rusher, but should be able to hold that edge in the run game

A healthy Perkins should help as well as two talented new safeties. Everyone knows just how bad our safeties were last year particularly when it came to tackling.

They had a few problems with that last season.

A couple of them were gap discipline and not properly navigating traffic around the line of scrimmage. That was more experience than scheme or personnel, though you might make the case for personnel in some cases.

The other was strictly about personnel, I think, because it was speed and tackling ability with maybe strength thrown in at the safety/DB positions.

I think it looks much better this season.

Having safeties that don't throw up on themselves every time they have to tackle should help a lot, and having a much deeper DL does not hurt either.

Evidently this a-hole is clairvoyant

No one outside of a few media members and maybe a few big donors who aren’t talking has seen this year’s defense play, and we all know for a fact that we’ve upgraded Safety, the DL, and Greg Penn at LB, yet this motherfricker KNOWS nothing has changed.
